Never before the over pressure valve and lid lock pop up.
Wait until both valves pop up, then for a decent hiss. Once I hear it I set my timer for 15 mins just to be sure I reach the correct internal temperature. I never run dry, I always cycle for 2 hours.

I start my mental timer for 5 minutes (usually ends up being closer to 10 ) when the lid lock pops up.

:whathesaid:  with my presto anyway… gotta hear that loud ass hiss before I set the timer for 15 minutes.  With the quarter trick very little water is lost @ 120 minutes

15 minutes is a long time to vent after the lock is up in my opinion. Wont hurt but the unit is
venting the entire  time it takes for the lid lock to pop up so it just seems like overkill to me.

I also dont put my lid on til the water inside is boiling so that helps but I've been doing it the
way I describe above for many years with no issues

p9, is your stove weak, or is that what you need to do even with a typical stove? A decent stove will vaporize about 600 mL of water in 15 minutes, which is roughly equivalent to a cubic meter in gas phase. Is that much purge really necessary? I've been (sometimes) shortening my purge times because my induction cooker is pretty aggressive, but maybe I shouldn't be.

Talking about sterilization.. what do you guys think about this chart, is it correct? (I found it on the internet)

Sounds way too good to just be able to sterilize 20 minutes at 20 psi

You're not gonna maintain 20psi in a presto :smoker:

I vent prestos 11/12min from lock pop.

I do this for redundancy, as nate stated above its overkill, I like overkill when it comes to my paranoia about bacteria.

I dont even use a quarter I tape mine down so that I maintain about 17-18 psi the entire time without any noise. As you can see I put a media bottle cap on top first to see if it was heavy enough, I just keep it there while taping it out of habit.

Last time I posted this pic, months ago, Nate was the one with the keen eye to spot the potential danger with having my guage backwards with the over pressure valve in the front; should it have failed while standing over the pot it would have melted my face

Its since been corrected. Thanks, Nate.

Yeah I dunno about presto, I have an autoclave that can reach 20 steadily so it'd come great to me if that chart is real :awesomenod: all this time I did 1.30hrs for jars at 20psi just for the sake of tranquility

I don't think my air vent lock (the thing that says "top" on the presto) ever pops up before I put the weight on,
how long does it usually take for it to pop up? little sprits of water start coming out when it starts hissing loudly
but still never pops until the weight goes on - I use a nuwave hot plate for my PC so maybe that could be part of it?
but that thing gets really hot like 500 degrees F so I doubt its due to that

Anyone have tips for cloning wild mushrooms? I tried to clone a random mushroom I found (not active) the other day and found a little worm right in the center of the stem lol.
Never had that happen before but everytime I've tried to clone wild mushrooms it always seems to get overrun with mold even when taking a piece from the inside.

I understand that in the wild there's an incredible amount of molds and little critters that infest the mushrooms and so on so are the insides of wild specimens not truly sterile in the same way that indoor mushrooms are or do I just need to take more precautions?
RR says rinse in iodine and then sterile water dunks, is that about right still? Any recommended chemicals to add to the agar for wild specimens?

That's the thing I've like rarely ever even had clean clone growth to transfer from a wild clone plate. I've had maybe once or twice where the mycelium looked correct but most of the of time, and maybe it was partially my technique, I've just had gnarly mold take over the whole plate in like 2 days.

The lid lock on my presto pops up pretty much as soon as steam starts coming out.. it’s just a 16L.  I’m an overkill kinda guy myself (have you seen my printing method ). Helps me sleep at night lol

 no problem dude. Anything to keep a non-trip induced face melting from happening.

So I bought a couple bags of uncle bens for funsies

Gonna try to pull somethin off. Wish me luck!

You guys don’t wait for it to start shooting a steady cone of steam to count vent time? That’s what I always had read/been told.

Sometimes it takes forever to do that though.

I never keep track of how much time I vent. I just wait for a steady stream of steam before I put the weight on.

Teagar. Regular mea, but make regular black tea to use as the base water. It slows down mold and mycelium to where you might get a clean spot. Bacteria is rendered inert/frozen. I use it for all clones and sometimes when I just want a break as it puts agar plates in slow motion.
