Because of the fundamental properties of the medium, even the shittiest SSD will have better latency than an HDD, especially for reading. Give it a try, I promise you'll feel the difference.
To reiterate, though, I'm not praising SSDs. I'm criticizing Windows. You shouldn't need better hardware to be back to 2001 performance.

2001 programs didn't have the massive codebase pushing them like modern applications do. They often did simple things simply, but these days applications take on very complex roles. They can, they couldn't before. Sure some developers take this as an opportunity to dump bloat in the software (cough, gag, Micro$oft) but others have turned this opportunity into amazing application. The music making applications I use today at v11 and v15 shit all over the V1's from 15 years back. I think rose coloured glasses make us think sometimes that programs and OS's of old were so great, back from times when we had 0 expectations.
Totally agree that even the cheapest SSD is a big jump in functionality though. It's where it's at these days for functional computing. Spinning rust is just for cheap storage and arrays really.

I'm not talking about application performance, though. I'm talking about performance while navigating the system itself. Using Explorer to browse directories, looking at configurations, menus, etc. I don't think there's any rose-tinting going on. I've used XP not that long ago and it always feels snappier than newer versions, even if I'm using older hardware (which I have on hand).
And it's not just Windows, by the way. Visual Studio has become unbearable on HDDs. And I can tell you, MS has not added a ton of features to it since 2008 to justify its start-up times.

I've used Windows 3.1 up to Windows XP when I was younger and using a parents computer. From 2007 to 2013 I was using OS x and then switched the fuck over to Windows because OS x was getting shittier and shittier and more bloatier and more bloatier. I never upgraded a 10 because I didn't want to be part of Microsoft's bullshit spyware and adware.
I know a solid state drive would help with startup time and load time of applications and file menus. I actually would really like faster Windows explorer to be honest. For folders with a large amount of files sometimes it takes a couple seconds to load when it could be faster with a solid state drive. So I see what you mean with the subtleties. With the prices I'm looking at it looks like it's cheaper to get a 2.5 in solid state drive from my dell laptop whereas a 3.5 inch would be a lot more expensive for my imac.

The W10 machines I manage start up in seconds, much faster than any MS operating system ever before. That's with 8Gb RAM, i5-5770 and M2 SSD's. Best enterprise machines I've had the pleasure of supporting. There are really random bugs that just aren't worth fixing, quicker to to reinstall, whereas that situation never came up on XP or W7. Could not reinstall the OS and all programs in less than an hour. Whether or not that's a good thing I do not know. Update cycles are all fucked, metro GUI is a major step backwards and lacks critical functionality, fortunately old controls still exist in the background and can be called from Run. It's a great OS, apart from all the attempted MS cloud server integration, imho. Even Server 2019 is way better than any of the last 3 Server versions. I've still got server 2000 and XP machines running obsolete hardware, it seems apparent to me just how far it's all come when I check in on them... good and bad.
For W10 users you should definitely look at the CSAND PowerShell script from Spiceworks. Does some serious unfucking, such a great piece of code.

You have to be insane to not be running your OS on an SSD in this day and age, using an HDD would be like driving around in a carbureted car. No matter what OS you run. Unless you just don't value your time. HDD are for backup and storage only.
Besides adding more RAM, an SSD is the best way for you to increase everyday performance that you will actually feel all the time.
You don't need to spend hundreds of dollars on a "gaming" level ssd, you can get a quality(not top shelf, but not bargain bin) 1TB M2 SSD for $125 or less, a 256 GB for $50. And if you need to you can just run your OS on the SSD and use an HDD(or the cloud) for storage, if you use multiple devices or have a family I would suggest looking into NAS.

I installed Windows 11 about 5 days ago after I finally figured out how to enable the goddamn TPM 2.0 thing, which was the only requirement on there that my computer wasn't able to pass.
If I had to give it a rating based on my experience with it overall in the last 5 days, on a scale of 1 - 10, I'd give it an 8/10.
An 8, and not a 10 because.... eh... it wasn't really that much different from Windows 10. When I first installed it and started using it, the way it looked made me feel like I was on another version of Linux; the way the menus and stuff looked.
Looked just like one of those versions of Linux, until I figured out how to change the appearance and all the settings that I could remember changing when I was on Windows 10.
As far as performance and speed, I'd say it was in the general area/range of about the same as Windows 10.
Do I think Linux/Ubuntu, etc is better? It might be, but I don't have the patience to sit down and learn all that shit, all just to be able to do simple basic shit like use a web browser or watch videos, use apps, etc.
I always had trouble with versions of Linux. I'd do the sudo get-update and all that shit if I got my wifi working, but eventually it just became annoying because I didn't need all those programs, packages, etc.
I'm not doing anything important or complicated. that would require an advanced-like operating system with an endless list of tools and apps and shit that I have never heard of, nor will I ever need to use.
It would just be some stupid problem every time that couldn't be fixed.
One version of Linux didn't even have the drivers for my wifi card, but Windows recognizes and installs the wireless card software immediately without even having to click anything.
Just like that! The wifi icon instantly appears on the taskbar, click it and there's the list of wireless networks.
All in all, it was majority about the same but I believe it's better than Windows 10 (Pro).

So does windows 11 come with adware and spyware by default by Micro$oft?

Linux is not the dark magic it once was and support for hardware and software is greater than ever. Plug it in, turn it on and away you go. It's been years since I had the dreaded driver wrangle with wifi cards and graphics cards, etc.
There's super easy distros for noobs like Mint. The menu is even Windowsesque, all the stuff in the same places, easy to navigate. All the software you could ever want is already installed. The updater runs in the background and a little icon appears on the taskbar which you click to update all the software on the system as well as the OS. No need to use command line at all anymore. No need for security applications, no need to be chasing individual updates for each program. No background updaters, no more deceptive windows tricking you to install bullshit, no more driveby attacks, Internet made easy.
I put my parents computers on that about a year ago because I was sick of fixing Windows for them. Haven't heard a word about their constantly fucked computers since.

Tested Ghost Spectre Win11 a bit on VirtualBox. Not much though.. Might be good for testing but I don't know how much it has been tampered.
Having win10 on two computers but still using win7 mainly..

You were probably missing the microcode necessary to operate the WiFi chip in your computer. If you want want to avoid that situation, then install a debian variant like Lubuntu, Ubuntu, Xubuntu, or Mint. These come preloaded with firmware in /lib/firmware, which should solve nearly all driver problems instantly. I personally use debian, and I find the driver I need based on the vendor/device id; you can see an example using the "lsusb" command, which returns a line of text for each usb device and contains an 8 digit hexadecimal code split by a colon. It looks like "1a5b:c52b"; the first part is the vendor id, and the second part is the device id for that vendor. The code is unique across different revisions of the same hardware, which allows you to identify the exact driver you need easily. You can also look up hardware before you buy it to make sure it will be compatible with GNU/Linux. You can also get the firmware you need usually through the debian repository by adding "non-free" to your /etc/apt/sources.list; see more information here.
If the driver doesn't exist, then you're SOL, but you have the freedom to write your own driver (difficult). This has happened to me with non-free fingerprint scanners included with Lenovo's ThinkPads. Technically, the driver does exist, but the vendor will not release a FOSS driver, and I encrypt my drives anyways, so it's not a big deal to me.

Since this thread started I spun up a W11 test VM. Seems much like a reskinned W10. Just more bugs, missing features, etc. This last version of W10 is finally "stable". Lol. Now they're gonna trash it and keep the stupid monkey show going. I hear only annual feature updates now though, finally realised they can't keep up with Linux releases.
