That study was perfectly reasonable . They just tested blood for people who had exposure to animals for evidence of being infected with animal viruses. They weren’t looking for just coronaviruses. As it happened, coronaviruses were the most common positive test results.
There’s also nothing strange about wargaming a coronavirus pandemic since the closest we’d come to a worldwide pandemic was the sars outbreak. Everyone in virology and public health has had coronaviruses at the top of their list of most concerning for a potential pandemic.

I’m really starting to question if open access to medical literature is a good idea. The people who actually need that access for their research aren’t really hurt by paywalls. Idk the utility in having open access to the lay population who almost always completely misunderstand or misrepresent the information.
Every state has land grant universities where their library catalog is open to the public for use in the libraries. If you really need to get access to medical journals, there are ways to do it. You just have to get off the couch.

It takes a certain amount of study to even get to the point where you’re able to properly analyze a research paper, whether the findings are valid/reliable, what the statistics mean, whether the sample sizes were adequate, what instruments were used for measurements and how valid/reliable those are, etc.. Once you have that down then you start to think of confounding variables, whether the results are generalizable (ex: everything kills covid in vitro), conflicts of interest, if the study’s been replicated, how credible is the journal, how’d it do in peer review, and on and on...
So more or less the average person who hasn’t taken the hours it takes to learn this stuff won’t even be at the point where they can read a study and say “I know what this study means”, let alone “I know what this study means and I know that these results prove my point as fact.” You don’t read a research paper like a newspaper article, it’s a very active process of dissection if you’re actually looking for truth and evidence instead of just a quote to use out of context.
I still think everyone should have access though. I put the blame on the researchers, the limitations section on most papers is usually a paragraph or two (if they even throw one in) when in reality it could be multiple pages for many studies. That would hurt their publication chances though, as would going further into depth into where their study is lacking and the exact reasons why “more research is needed”.
It’s also incredibly fun to point out to someone that the study that they’re using as their “proof” not only doesn’t prove their point, but actually outright argues against it. It’s less annoying than having to argue against someone quoting some conspiracy grift site or YouTube video. These people argue essentially by just throwing piles of shit at the wall and hoping one piece sticks.
My all time favorite is hamhead copy and pasting the “Influenza” Wikipedia page as his proof that influenza was actually not a flu. I can only imagine that it was like some sort of hail mary pass, that if he posted enough words then maybe something in there would prove him at least a little right.
You’re just not going to change someone’s mind when their brain is turned off.

Realize none of that training is a guarantee as well.
I am glad you mentioned conflicts of interest. We've seen a lot of them in the last year and a half. Good science is fraught with so much dimensionality that assuring quality science is not easy and there's a real incentive for guild-behavior to trump rigor.
The world is broken and that includes many of the putatively sophisticated folks.

I woke up with a sore throat this morning and have been losing my voice steadily all day. Just because I threw all caution to the wind this weekend doesnt mean I got covid. Could just be partying pretty hard. Everyone in our group was fully vaxxed. Maybe my immune system was destroyed by a year of wearing a mask and getting no oxygen, not eating enough vegetables and eschewing all sunshine.

There was a lot of sharing of drinks and smoking materials and a recent case of strep. My throat is getting better but I pretty much sound like a squeak toy at this point. I’ve been bullied all day with comments about me finally hitting puberty and sounding like marge Simpson. Gay men are vicious.

Yea I went out with some friends this weekend in SF, I didn't realize it was Pride Really wild to be back in packed bars, no masks except for the staff. The next morning I stumbled hungover into a coffee shop. I was the only one not wearing a mask, it was really confusing. Mask whiplash.
