Drying in a food dehydrator
    #2735848 - 05/27/04 10:20 AM (12 years, 6 months ago)

I'm a first time grower and will be harvesting some of my first mushrooms by tomorrow. I purchased a food dehydrator and have disabled the heating element in it. My question is generally how long do the mushrooms take to dry using this type of method?

Also, the mushrooms that start growing but then stop and the caps start to turn blackish, those are aborts right? I just wanted to make sure i did the right thing by picking them off.

Thanks!

Should be ready in a day or so. You'll know when they are cracker dry and they snap when you try to bend them.

Edit: Yes you were right to pick the aborts off and these are still fine for use.

also, my particular food dehydrator has a heat range setting from 96 to 155 degrees. I put a togle switch on the wires going to the element so i can turn off the heat completely when i am drying mushrooms, but im wondering if using the heat on the 95 degree setting or would it make my mushrooms lose potency?

95 is perfect man...thats what I always use and they are just as potent as ever....in fact I've tried drying a flush using a dehydrator that only had 1 heat setting....the shrooms were hot to the touch after being in it but didn't seem to lose any potency either... so ya 95 is fine

that is good to know, it will sure speed things up.

but why do people say that temps over 95 will kill potency?

Wow I never knew that, I've seen everywhere on this board that you do NOT use heat to dry the shrooms. I've seen fan for 24 hours, (with an electric fan) then use that "stuff" (whatever its called to help dry things out, sorry) that absorbs water and thats enough.

If no potency is lost then it seems like something that needs to be tried by afoaf. Thanks for the info:)
