Id rather murder infant animals then eat hydrated wbs. But at least you'll know it's properly prepped:stoned:

my girlfriend loves eating all types of grain after they've been prepped. i typically make more than i need just so i don't end up a quart short while she helps me load jars or bags. but, she's a psycho.

i don't think it smells bad man.

5 minute cook?! Holy shit thats fast. How does it compare to 30 and 60 minute hot soaks like fooman?

The grain hot soaks for more than 5 min if you include the time it takes for the water to heat up. So between 10 and 15 min hot soak in this grain prep.

I would say 15min hot soak gets WBS to about 60% hydration

and 60 min hot soak hydrates the WBS to 77%.

So there is a big difference in hydration with WBS at least.

After 20 min of being dumped in a pot of hot water (after removing the pot from heat after full boil) Fooman style I think

After 60 min in hot water soak 60-85 degrees C (165-210F)

WBS hydration methods -[EXPERIMENT]-

This is correct.  In fact, it's a little under 60%.  Weighed out 400 grams of seed dry, then compared & contrasted.

Dry weight.

Wet weight.

Never gave hydration of grain much thought due to method of seed preparation working out so good for several years.  This way of doing it still works great as displayed by fruits featured above.

However, to get moisture content of seed more towards the 75% range figure instead of a five minute simmer on medium heat up the simmer time on low heat for somewhere between 15-30 minutes will suffice.  Will be playing with simmer times in the near future with goal of getting moisture content of seed to 75% in shortest amount of time possible, and reporting results here.  Thanks for helping out.

Hey hamloaf. Did you ever get around to experimenting with the low heat instead of the medium? I’ve noticed some of my jars stall out and was wondering if it might be because my seed is on the dry side after a while of colonizing.

Eating prepped WBS... shit son.
Though, really, this kind of crazy tends to manifest in entertaining ways otherwise.

You want a simmer.  To simmer a liquid is to keep it just below boiling.  Hamloaf has you lowering the heat at 200°F.  Boiling point of water is 212°F.  Buy a cheap little infrared thermometer and take note.

The boiling was easy, straining not so much because I didn't have a wire strainer but a plastic strainer with large drain holes. Of the 12 jars, I contaminated 3, 2 stalled and the other 7 are fruiting like crazy on the first flush.
I prepped another 6 qt of wbs last night, this time with a wire mesh strainer. Loaded 12 pint jars and 2 qt jars. Out of the pot this morning, shook them up. Will noc in 2-3 days.
My altitude is 1450 m. The water boiling point is 204 F, makes it very easy to monitor the simmer.
Thank you so much for this tek! I was hesitant to try grain until I saw your post.

Awesome, thanks Ham! I gave it a go for my first grain prep and it seems great so far. Here’s my first jar, looking almost ready to me. I feel like it looks happy, healthy, and clean too!

Hi, this has been my go to method for the last 5 years, for a few reasons. First the price, bird seed is cheap as shit, and in a pinch have used parakeet seeds, which is the small seeds but it worked fine.
Second this tek is written so well and so easy to follow, and third, you can’t prep other grain as fast. It is the quickest, cheapest and easiest method I’ve used.

Hell yeah! Oh, you might need to get a finer strainer? I bought a couple of quinoa strainers and they work great. Good luck
