Wheat bran and Lion's Mane
    #27323200 - 05/25/21 09:56 PM (2 years, 9 months ago)

I have a quart jar of LM colonized on rye berries from agar that I cloned off from a fruit.  Was planning on using pasteurized Oak/Hickory grilling pellets as sawdust with an 8oz cup of coffee and a pinch of gypsum added to the substrate. Equal volume pellets to liquid, about 1 quart, using mycobags with filter.

What ratio of spawn to substrate is optimal?  Would 1:2 be okay, then I could divide the spawn into two bags.

Is wheat bran highly recommended?  Does it enhance colonization time or make fruits less bitter?

Should I pasteurize and then pressure cook (if not using wheat bran) or is pasteurizing alone sufficient?

You can pasteurize but I would skip the coffee if you go that route.

Bran should increase yield but would need to be sterilized.

1:2 is fine. If you sterilize you can use less like 1:4 or so.

I use 1 quart jar (which is 2c. Grain) per 5lb bag.

Wheat bran is recommended for better yields than no supplementation, but soy hulls are the most highly recommended for supplementation. 50%/50% hwfp/soy hulls or 20% wheat bran in hwfp sub (I do 5c. hwfp, 1.25c. bran, 1.4L water for a 5lb bag).

If not supplementing, only need to pasteurized. Pressure cooking is required for supplemented substrate.

I'll be getting the wheat bran and sterilizing.  Gonna look around for the soy hulls.  Thanks for the help.

Make sure to get your water content right, as in like, measure it probably.  I don't think equal volume pellets to liquid is gonna be good.

I followed taku's advice and did 5c. hwfp, 1.25c. bran, 1.4L water.  Looked good to me.  It's currently in the pc.  Going for 2 and half hours.

So the top of the bag is fruiting like crazy but the center has not fully colonized, generally how long does a bag take using ~6c substrate and 1qt spawn, ~74F?  I'm at just over 2 weeks.  When should I cut the sides?  Do I want it fully consolidated?

Lion's mane looks different when fully colonized lion mane is thin and whispy. I would slice that bag and get it into the fruiting chamber.

Locked and loaded, thanks guys!  It's going to the basement.  Cooler temps with high humidity, fresh air and indirect light from the broken window.

Decided to keep it at room temp with bag coverage, week and half later I got quite a chonker.  Going to prep a few more bags to give to friends/family.  Quite satisfying considering one month ago I had no idea what I was doing.

Awesome. I cloned a lion's mane I bought at the store and am going to fruit with wheat bran, wood pellets and wild madrone chips. Glad to see your thread.

I've got four wbs spawn bags that have been colonizing in extreme temps due the heat wave and my lack of climate control. It has gotten over 100 degrees in my house but has generally been in the mid to high 90s at the hottest.

Shiitake is colonizing but not at the same rate as the LM which is actually doing great at these temps.

Looks great!! You could let that grow a few more days. Pick when the teeth get to around 1/4 inch in length. Nice job.

It's all a matter of preference, but I like to harvest them right when the teeth start growing.  The mushroom has already gotten as big as it's gonna get so I don't see a reason to let the teeth grow and get spores all up in your living space.

Yeah that's true. It's an aesthetic thing for me.
