How do these PF Tek jars looks?
    #27337474 - 06/06/21 02:17 PM (1 month, 24 days ago)

Hi everyone.  Here are a few pics of my PF Tek jars. Its been exactly 1 week since I inoculated them.  I followed the entire sterilized guidelines on the Roadrunner YouTube videos.  I haven't bothered the jars or looked at them at all till now.  There are 5 of them in a "Brooding Chamber" I bought off the internet.  Its made of a new black tote with a gasket lid and 4 red snap shut locks.

I'm curious what you all think of what is going on in the jars?  It looks good to me, but then it kinda looks "fluffy".  which I'm pretty sure is not what I want.

Please help

Thanks

Looks good to me:thumbup: mycelium can sometimes be more fluffy than rhizomorphic. I've also seen jars start out with thinner and wispy myc they eventually consolidated and looked more like what is expected.

Looks good bryan.  Yes there are two types of mycelium growth as Conch mentioned & yours is fluffy.  Don't worry you'll see some rhizomorph (root like) growth soon enough.

The hardest part of starting the mycology hobby is patience.

Also don't worry about wearing gloves to touch your jars.  The vermiculite layer is for that.  Personally I never wear gloves... ever.  I do however wash my hands at least twice when I inoculate my jars, shred my cakes to bulk &/or when I'm picking my fruits.

Do you have any source of light, like a CFL bulb 6500K?

they're fine, but incubaters are over kill. Jars do fine on a shelf at roughly room temp with 12/12 light. And they like air. Sounds like the tub is air tight cause of the gasket? that's bad.

I don't have any light source during the colonizing process.  Once they are finished in the jars, I will have a set up for them to get some light.  Also, these are Ecuador species.  When should I check them next?  I'm ok with waiting as this is a project for a friend, and I just love doing stuff like this I guess.  I have already grew a batch way back in like 2009, so I'm familiar with this PF Tek.

Nice to see people actually still use this website, I wasn't aware if it was still active and booming, or what, but I'm glad its going.  Lots of help I've gotten from this website, super smart people.

Ill keep you all update with pics when I check them next, I'm just gonna wait till this Sunday.

Alright, later!

Yea, back in 09 they did stuff like colonizing in dark and tieing substrates up in a trash bag. Things have changed. Let your mushrooms breathe and get light.

More minor. It's not equador sp. It's cubensis and a cube is a cube. They all(mostly) grow the same. Equador is just a variety.

Hi everyone.  So I decided to just go ahead and check the cakes today instead of tomorrow.  They are doing good in terms of no mold or other bad stuff, but there is one issue.  One of the cakes has the substrate like gone in one area, and there is a complete hole there....I have attached photos, its the #7 and #9 photos.  Sorry for the bad camera shots, my phone was not wanting to focus properly.  If you need better shots, I can try setting them on the desk and get them with my Go Pro.

Let me know what you guys think, should they be fine?  or do I need to shake them or what's the deal.  Thanks for all the help so far BTW.
Also, where can I buy Perlite?  I got a small bag off amazon.com, but I would rather shop locally, I tried Walmart and they don't have it apparently. Thanks

Bryan

bryan100030

Those PF Tek Jars all look great, except picture 7, the jar with the mycelium in the top left with bronze/brown growth, the bronze could be contamination or myc piss, get several more opinions on the brown in photo 7.

Are you using Micropore tape to cover the inoculation holes?

As for perlite, Amazon or local gardening/hardwarestore.

Here are some better quality photos. (These photos can be found in my post I put up on 07/15/21 @ 09:12 AM) I think that brown is only the substrate, I could be wrong.  There are a couple that look like they have some "dark grey" to them, not sure what that is, if its normal or what, but I think my water ratio got off balance when I sterilized the jars in my pot on the stove.  I didn't put tin foil on the tops of the jars, I had to use a rubber band around some parchment paper to keep the water from seeping into the "inoculation" points.  I'm not sure, but I guess I'm open to what you guys have to say.

Yes I have micropore tape over the Inoculation points.  Everything was done text book style, only mistake would be using parchment paper with a rubber band instead of tinfoil when sterilizing jars on stove in my cooking pot (NEW).

Yea they look alright. Dont toss any yet.

Take the tape off. Its not needed and can be a drawback. Dry verm is your filter.

Long as the cover kept water out the hole then it did the job.

do you think I should take the tops off completely for a few hours....does it look like they are over watered?  or is that a bad idea?

Nah lid stays on. You don't want the dry verm layer spilling. These things are made to do this. Trust it.

Those jars mycelium looks good, however the substrate appears to be overly wet.

I belive you used too much water for this batch of substrate, next time, try to use a collander (pasta water drainer) after mixing Vermiculite and Water, let the wet Verm sit in a Collander (Its a bowl with tiny holes) to let the extra water drain out for a few minutes.

Also, because your jars are so damp/excess moisture, I'd reccomend taking the Micropore tape off this time.

Normally, I leave micropore tape on during the entire colonization and consolidation phase,

but due to having excess moisture in this case, I'd reccomend taping the Micropore tape off to allow more fresh air exchange/evaporation.

Shouldn't have to strain if you mix the right proportions. 2:1:1.

Never use mp tape. theres no reason.

1. Straining ensures the extra water drains out, I use proper ratio and alwayse drain several dozen drops of water, its a good practice to ensure exact field capacity.

2.Micropore tape might 'catch' contams similar to how verm does. I know contams can be smaller than the Micropore holes , but I think its worth using.

Those all look pretty good to me. Maybe a couple showing some signs of being slightly bacterial but even so BRF is made for that shit.
