Brugmansia care?

I was gifted a real nice Brugmansia plant and although I’ve wanted one for awhile I’ve never really searched their care real thorough. Are there any ‘peer reviewed’ care sheets that will keep me from making beginner guess mistakes? I can’t imagine it’s too difficult I just really don’t want to screw this one up.

best soil probably good potting soil with sand+compost+perlite put some green grass and cured hay at the bottom of pot under the soil to give earthworms food and habitat. top dress soil occasionally with amendments(worm castings/guano/crab/bone/fish/feather meal, avoid raw manure and actually avoid guano altogether because they are fucking up really fragile ecosystems to harvest that shit and it is totally unethical and unnecessary get some chickens or quail use their shit it is the best fertilizer ever excreted. light mulch on top compost/grass clippings and woodchips

Amanita, not sure what your growing climate is like, but I have a Brugmansia in front of my house that is probably at least eight years old. Morning sun, rain, zero care from me besides heavy pruning once a year. The thing is about fifteen feet tall and seems to thrive on neglect. I just let it do its' thing and it has been thriving.

Word, that’s my favorite kind of care sheet. It’s a little cold here during winter so it’ll have to stay mobile and come in then but there may be a chance it’ll tolerate it once it’s bigger. Do you have any photos of yours flowering?

Boy, that is a beast! Here is one of mine. It needs a re-pot badly! They are super easy to grow, and I have others in the ground all over my yard

Damn, son. I’m trying to figure out on mine where the flowers will show up. I’m told they respond to the longest days so, should be flowering if that’s the case. It does appear to be growing super fast though. I should double check what the flowering triggers are..

your is very nice. From all my years of growing them, mine never flower until late summer, right before it starts getting cold out, and last through a few frosts before they go dormant.

Mine are pushing blooms right now. They typically flower all summer for me.

Well, it stays cold here and still freezes up into March. plus, mine have to come back from the roots and get big enough to flower, which takes until late summer early fall around here. It sucks too, because you don't get to see too many flowers before the frost takes them out. That one I posted overwintered in the ground, and I dug it up really early to baby it and see if it will flower sooner than the in ground ones. It desperately needs a bigger pot though, that is for certain.

Have ya’ll ever heard about the “Y” they have to have before they bloom?
Interesting factoid (that I read): If you take cuttings from below the Y, those cutting will have to vegitate until they grow a Y before they flower. If you take cutting above the Y, those cutting will flower right away.

Amanita, I don't follow what you mean about the "Y".

Going by the photo it just looks like where the main stalk forks into two. I’ll try and find that picture again.
Here is a link mentioning it, it’s not the one with the photo though:
Quote:
Angel Trumpet has a distinct growing pattern. It initially puts all its growing energy into forming one or more primary trunks with leaves. Once it reaches about 4.5 feet in height, the trunks will develop a fork (a “Y” shape). From there, it will continue to branch off. It’s at this point that plant growth is devoted to flowering. Everyone who loves Brugmansia is always looking for that initial “Y”; knowing that it won’t be long before the flowering begins.
This growth pattern is important to keep in mind when propagating. Cuttings rooted from the primary trunk (below the “Y”) will focus on reaching growth height (4.5 or more feet) before they begin developing flowering branches. But cuttings rooted from the flowering branches (above the “Y”) can put out flowering branches much sooner.
https://soeasilydistracted.com/backyard/growing-and-propagating-angel-trumpet-brugmansia/
That may not be the most legit source but it’s what I’ve seen mentioned elsewhere. If I can’t find the ex. pic I’ll try to find it in a random Brug photo.

But of course, every Brugmansia grower should know this
This is why mine don't bloom until late summer. They have to regrow back from the roots, and get tall enough to get that "Y".

I need to get mine in a bigger pot.
So do these tend to come as cuttings or are they grown from seed? If they are cuttings does this count as a Y or is this just a fork in the base?
