Mothers Day - 8/10

The opening scene is pretty brutal, so is the film, but it's a fun freaky watch. I can't figure out if it's genius or just stupid. Classic 80's stuff though.

You Can't Take It With You (1938)
10/10

A fantastic feel-good film that shows you how having the love of friends and family is so much more valuable than money. Even though is stars Jimmy Stewart,  Lionel Barrymore steals the show here.  I was really pleasantly surprised with selecting this film.

Igby Goes Down (2002)
8/10

A dark yet delightful film that once again shows how everyone is messed up in their own way and just trying to make it in this ridiculous world.  A well-acted and impressive collection of cast members fill the film and I think that this is the first movie I have seen with Kieran Culkin in a starring role, who is a much better actor than his brother Macauly.

The Rum Diary (2011)
6/10

This was my 3rd time watching this film, the first time being in the theater.  I was reading a lot of Hunter S. Thompson then but I wasn't really wowed by the movie.  I paid a lot more attention this time being that I now knew that the director was Bruce Robinson who also directed Withnail and I and only a couple of other movies.  Depp's acting was very much like his portrayal of hunter in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and I think I remember in an interview with Depp that he had promised Hunter to help make this film before Hunter died.  The film does drag in spots but is an interesting story nonetheless, mostly the aspect of a jounalist trying to expose corruption when the system is against him.

Hounds of Love (2016)

A couple who kidnap and terrorise a young woman in the suburbs of Perth, and was loosely based upon the crimes of David and Catherine Birnie.

Came across this film on the Arrow Video website when buying Thief (1981)

Pretty intense in places, uncomfortably so at times. All in all, well worth a watch.

7.5/10

Peanut butter Falcon 9/10 -A man with down syndrome runs away from a residential nursing home to pursue his dream of becoming a wrestler. Later, he meets with an outlaw who becomes his friend and coach.

Amazing journey and Shia leBeouf does an amazing performance!

Greyhound

A little far fetched in places, and wanting for a bit of character development, but overall a decent WW2 naval action flick - good action sequences and CGI, not too over the top.
7/10

Compañeros (1970)
8/10

A very enjoyable and entertaining spaghetti western that has a little bit of everything.  It is directed by Sergio Corbucci, who directed the original Django film and also stars Franco Nero who played the original Django.  The best part of this movie was Jack Palance's performance as the villain, who seemed to be smoking the weeds or perhaps opium laced cigarettes.  He smokes constantly and in the first scene you see him in, he is smoking something rolled fat and he smokes it down to the bone with the aid of a toothpick.  He lays around a lot and has a sleepy demeanor.  This character is a creepy Irish burnout stoner, more effeminate Vincent Price-type falconer: he is a very John Waters meets Tim Burton type of guy.  Anywhoo, it is a great movie.

Space Truckers (1996)
8/10

I was pleasantly surprised with this one.  This movie has the same comic-book feel and high-octane action as Fifth Element and I found it just as entertaining, and came out a year before.  It has some of the worst CGI I have seen as well as some of the best, especially by 1996 standards.  Dennis Hopper once again showcases his acting versatility in this and Debi Mazar is a total babe.  This movie can be a lot of fun for those who don't take movies too seriously.

True Romance (1993)
10/10

This is my first time revisiting this movie since the 90s.  This film was written by Quentin Tarantino and the cast including many actors that would go on to be regulars later in Taratino's directed movies.  The action scenes are gritty and explosive in this beautifully shot movie.  Gary Oldman really shines here and is one of my favorite actors to play a villian. He is a master of accents.  It is simply a fantastic film.

My favorite movies to watch are anime while I'm under the influence.  Finally got my wife to watch PONYO with me (she hates anime).

Not my favorite in the animation department when it comes to GHIBLI movies but it was still a good story.  Couldn't get over Liam Neilson voicing the ocean man.

The wife loved it and now we can watch the res of the "childish" GHIBLI movies.  I threw on PORCO a couple weeks ago and she thought it was disgusting?!  Hopefully PONYO has changed her mind.
