Filters

I asked a question about filters before but I have another one. Ok, in the tek I am using, there is no info about filters but I want to use them. I have coffee filters.......so is there any way to sterilize them before I use them? Should I put them on before I cook the jars? Im afraid they will get wet..... also, the way I am thinking, is to cut a hole in the filter the same size as the opening of the jar and just rest it on the top layer of vermiculite and then put the lid on. Does that sound sufficient? Thx in advance.

And they are right. Coffee filters suck. Get tyvek or poly-fil.

Coffee filters fresh out of the package will be sterile or nearly so anyway.
I use them in place of lids. Jar, coffee filter, ring. Pressure cook, remove ring, innoculate through filter, apply second filter, apply ring. Jars incubate in humidified fruiting chamber.
Lots of air exchange, and while they aren't as good at keeping out contamination, there isn't much contamination in the fruiting chamber anyway, so its never been an issue.
Its not better than other methods though, so I don't really recommend it.
