You can leave the pins to grow a little bit more if you're not in a hurry. As for the contam plate... Drop the pin in 3%H2O2 for 10 minutes and then put it on a new plate. I use this method to clone panaeolus and I take the pins from the fc. It always works.

Thanks, nosf3r4tu, I like answers that are practical. Also good to know by implication that bacterial contamination within a pin is, in your experience, very unlikely. Good info!

Hey all, do some strains of Melmac not recover well from shaking? I had an LC on oats that was utterly tearing through my grain spawn, but after shaking, it’s barely budged for 2 weeks. It doesn't look bacterial. And if it is bacterial, why does the problem reveal itself so often after shaking? My grain is good judging by the other strains in same batch of jars, and if the lc was bad, wouldn't it have started off as bad since the bacteria would have been right with the mycelium in the culture right from the starf? Thanks.

Question for you all. I’ve got one quart each of a few different melmacs. I was gonna spawn them each to a shoebox but wasn’t sure if I should go 1:2 or 1:3 spawn:sub. Given melmac’s wonkiness, is it better to get the sub colonized faster or give the larger fruits a thicker sub? Thanks.

am about to be gifted spores of Albino Melmak <3 .. thats so lovely. am not entirely certain yet if i will be getting into Melmak TP as well that depends on a nother friend.
I'm really fascinated by the genetics, particularly because of how special the *type* of genetic anomalies is... i think it's in the non-coding region. There is very few examples of that (sure, i guess its speculation if thats whats going on anyway but i think a good argument can be made).. Actually i would be hard-pressed to give another example of it. Hmm maybe KSSS, not sure.
Wish there was more info available on how genetics actually relate to various known special traits.
I haven't grown it yet but 1:2 sounds good to me and you can just put a nice thick top layer of something like CVG sub as a sort of casing... However not sure how much melmak can blob, i dont think its quite as known for it as PE is? Either way even if it was like PE in that respect it will always depend on what exact strain of it you have combined with the conditions and the effect those two have together, people can treat (various strains of) PE differently in terms of toplayers when it comes to blobbing and the formation of overly solid top layers, some people basically recase after a number of flushes, I suppose flipping the whole thing might help.
Healthy spawn should as a very general rule mean that you should be safe and your typical CVG like substrate is not nutritious so that it shouldn't matter if it took its sweet time colonizing it, thats not why to use a high spawnrate. It's just because of efficiency. But i get what you mean i think, if there were factors that would result in more moisture loss than normal, more substrate and/or "sub casing" can be a bit of a buffer against that, but again: mostly if you have a particular reason to think it might dry out pretty quickly. So, anything about that wonkiness I don't know?

Itll colonize and pin around the same speed no matter 1:2 or 1:3. Sometimes 1:3 will pin faster because there is more substrate and less nutrients, leading to it wanting to fruit more quickly. Personally, I'd use the extra substrate for a thicker than usual top layer
Regardless, I bet both of those ratios would be dandy and PE/MM cultures can be finicky that I doubt youd be able to tell which would work better for you until you just give it a shot and see how it turns out and make notes about it.

Streaked my TP swabs from Budda and my last swab from Quirk.
Really hoping for some actual Mak and not another revert.
Growing real tired of spore drops.

I got a Melmac X TWC that looks promising. Gonna take some tissue samples and see what kind of canopies I can get.
The don't sporesplode, and they look cool enough. Gotta bioassay...
Some spores, not too much though. Smells good in the dehydrator, but not quite as funky as Melmac.
 Yield is up there
