  • 1980:  Pink Floyd release the single for "Run Like Hell" b/w "Don't Leave Me Now"

Quote:

"Run Like Hell" is a song from the 1979 Pink Floyd album The Wall.

Lyrics and music

The song is written from the point of view of anti-hero Pink during a hallucination in which he becomes a fascist dictator and turns a concert audience into an angry mob. He sends the mob out to raid nearby neighborhoods that are full of minorities.

The music was written by David Gilmour (one of the three songs on The Wall for which Gilmour wrote music), while the lyrics were written solely by Roger Waters. Waters provides the vocals (except for "Run, Run", in which Gilmour is lead singer). The song features the only keyboard solo on The Wall (although on live performances, "Young Lust" and "Another Brick in the Wall, Part II" would also feature keyboard solos); after the last line of lyrics, a synthesiser apparently takes over Waters' singing. Also in the song are the sound of the mob's maniacal laughter, running footsteps, car tyres skidding, and a loud scream. The original single version and promotional EP both contain a clean guitar intro, without the live crowd effects.

The bass intro is in D major. This intro is very similar to the bass intro for "Another Brick in the Wall (Part 1)", while the verses are in E minor.  The song's original form was much longer. However, it had to be cut due to time limitations of the vinyl record format.  Although the lyrics "run like hell" appear several times in the liner notes, they are never actually heard in the song. Near the end, the same piercing shriek (performed by Waters) can be heard in an almost identical way to that heard at the end of "The Happiest Days of Our Lives" when segueing into "Another Brick in the Wall (Part II)"

Run Like Hell
(B-side: Don't Leave Me Now) was released as a single in the US. It reached No. 53 in the charts.

  • 2001:  Wirikuta declared national sacred site

Quote:

Wirikuta is a site, sacred to the Huichol Indians high in the mountains of central Mexico, between the Sierra Madre Occidental and the Zacatecas ranges.

Wirikuta is the sacred land of the Huichols' deified ancestors. Huichols carry out yearly pilgrimages to Wirikuta or Huiricuta and collect peyote - a cactus containing hallucinogens - along the way. The peyote is eaten during special ceremonies and, they believe, enables the Huichols to commune directly with their ancestors and deities. The pilgrimage is one of the highlights of the Huichols' religious year.

On June 9, 2001, Wirikuta and the historic Wixárika pilgrimage route were declared a Natural Sacred Site, recognizing 140,211.85 hectares that protect the longitude of the historic route that spans more than 138 kilometers.

Here's more about the virtually unknown lycergamide LAE-32, that Sidney Gottlieb was requesting funding for in his June 9, 1953 CIA memo.  It's so obscure that it isn't clear if it's illegal or not and there is probably no place on earth to buy it.

Quote:

Lysergic acid ethylamide (also known as LAE-32, LAE, and d-ethyllysergamide) is a semisynthetic psychedelic substance of the lysergamide class that is structurally similar to LSD. LAE-32 is one of the least known and least researched psychedelic substances. The pharmacology of LAE-32 is complex, but it acts primarily by binding to serotonin receptors in the brain, much like LSD and other serotonergic psychedelics.

The CIA and Project MKULTRA Findings

LAE-32 was experimented with by the CIA as part of Project MKULTRA. It was reported to create a condition similar to that of schizophrenia in mentally healthy individuals, characterized by indifference and depersonalization. While it was reported that, when used on schizophrenics, it created a condition that allowed the patients to become indifferent to their hallucinations and cease hallucinatory excitation.

Chemistry

LAE-32, or d-lysergic acid ethylamide, is a semisynthetic substance of the lysergamide family. LAE-32's chemical structure consists of a bicyclic hexahydroindole ring fused to a bicyclic quinoline group (lysergic acid). At carbon 8 of the quinoline an N, generally N-ethyl carboxamide is bound, LAE-32 is additionally substituted at carbon 6 with a methyl group.

Pharmacology

LAE-32 most likely acts by binding to serotonin receptors in the brain. It may, like LSD, bind to dopamine receptors as well.
Subjective effects

The subjective effects of LAE-32 are reportedly mainly sedating and depersonalizing, creating a state of indifference in users.

The effects listed below are based upon the subjective effects index and personal experiences of PsychonautWiki contributors. These effects should be taken with a grain of salt and will rarely (if ever) occur all at once, but heavier doses will increase the chances of inducing a full range of effects. Likewise, adverse effects become much more likely on higher doses and may include serious injury or death.

Legal status

LAE-32 is not explicitly illegal in any nation, but it is possibly illegal to possess in the United States for purposes of consumption due to the Federal Analog Act.

A substance very closely related to LSD, the monoethylamide of lysergic acid (LAE-32), in which an ethyl group is replaced by a hydrogen atom on the diethylamide residue of LSD, proved to be some ten times less psychoactive than LSD. The hallucinogenic effect of this substance is also qualitatively different: it is characterized by a narcotic component. This narcotic effect is yet more pronounced in lysergic acid amide (LA-111), in which both ethyl groups of LSD are displaced by hydrogen atoms. These effects, which I established in comparative self-experiments with LA-111 and LAE-32, were corroborated by subsequent clinical investigations.

(LSD: My Problem Child by Albert Hofmann)

LAE-32, N-ethyllysergamide. Different people have observed and reported different effects,
with different routes of administration. Subcutaneous administrations of from 500 to 750
micrograms have been said to produce a state of apathy and sedation. Clinical studies with
dosages of 500 micrograms i.m. were felt to be less effective than the control use of 100
micrograms of LSD. And yet, oral doses of twice this amount, 1 .6 milligrams, have been said
to produce a short-lived LSD-like effect with none of these negatives.
