I'm curious. How long do man made ovoid beds usually take to fruit? I have been bringing back spawn for two years now,and so far no ovoids. Lots of nice healthy mycellium throughout but it wont fruit.

Usually more than one season. If you start a patch in the summer it usually doesn’t fruit until the second spring.

When starting from spores I have not gotten anything to fruit until at least one full season has passed.

In late April or early May I brought home a wild log and plastic grocery bag full of colonized bits and it is already fruiting again.

So in my experience it depends.  Also if you keep feeding them and feeding them they might stay in colonization mode.  Still trying lots of a different things to see what works best...  Mulch where I put casing layer with grass seed mixed in at the start of spring has produced the most.  Some mulch without casing layer hasn't done anything even though I keep it watered.  Casing of coco, peat(limed for PF), vermiculite, grass seed.

This must be my problem then. I kept adding new wood on top,and I recently through a big old bag of hard wood mulch over it. When I dig down though, you can see where the mycellium is ravaging through the mulch. I reckon I'll cover it with leaves this fall, and not feed it anymore. Maybe it will fruit next spring, fingers crossed!

Just a few hand fulls of thin shavings of boxwood made on a old craftmans jointer/planer produced the next spring 11 months. The patches with larger chunks took two seasons.

1: dug a trench, sift the soil and put it back in the trench, pore 3 gallons of boiling water over it.
2: when cooled - dig the soil back out of the trench and put the sterilized shavings in along with the steam buds or infected material.
3: cover over the shavings with the soil.
4: cover over the soil with more shavings.

The thin shaving patches produced large clusters like the one in my signature.

Transplant large sections of mycelium bearing pins for the fastest growth in a new patch, cheap landscaping mulch works fine, even better if you mix some dirt in with it to help them decompose it faster

Thanks for the tips fellas  I actually added river sand and mud to my mix and I used cheap hardwood black mulch. I've also found that ovoid mycellium just doesn't decompose hard wood, they will eat corn stalks too. I found this out on accident. I'll just leave mine alone, and maybe next spring I'll be pleasantly surprised!  :aliceshocker:

Welp went back to check some pins and the good news is they grew to maturity at least, too mature. Feeling a lil burnt out tho and don't want to ruin hunting. Lot of work for a few. Bugs are terrible, first ticks, and high humidity. More rain and milder weather coming so I'll be hitting the trails and lakes til then.

Have a great weekend yall :mushroom2:

If you keep em wet and shaded u might get a fall flush, drip irrigation works like magic

I was thinking of keeping mine well watered through the whole summer, just to see if it would indeed fruit this fall. Think it could work?

This was a horrible year for me too, because I'm not the only one who picks them at my spot. I got there too late and only found one patch this season. Not worth the hour drive just for a trips worth of mushrooms so I brought back tons of spawn. I also searched form early morning until the evening and ended up with 6 grams dry, what a waste!

Yeah if I find patches in public places where I know other people will find them, I rip almost all the mycelium and pins to transplant to a secure location. I know it sounds cruel but I've been on the other side of it so I'd rather be the one ripping than getting ripped u naw mean? If you got a good amount of colonized spawn and keep the patch watered, with shade, and a casing layer like crushed leaves or ground cover like strawberries or rye grass, your chances of getting a fall flush are very well. Under the correct conditions ovoids may actually fruit mid summer, I've seen irrigated mulch beds with pachysandra as cover fruiting in July and August. Usually wild fruits won't make it past the last week of June here, aside from a few dried stragglers

I'm going to add some leaves on top of my bed,and keep it well watered. It just started getting really hot here, a rarity because usually the real heat starts around the first of May.

I'll keep you posted

Disappointed but not too surprised to hear that greed and zero-sum thinking drives many ovoid hunters behavior. Especially bummed to hear this from someone like you Shroomhunts, who likely has more patches than you can hit in a season.

This is exactly why I have my spawn project going. I'm picking too, but also putting patches back out there in the wild and in public places to try & make up for all the scarcity-minded folks who can't help but rip up every rhizome and pin for fear that someone else might get to enjoy the natural gifts they believe they're exclusively entitled to because they happened upon them.

IMHO, this type of behavior is why we can't have nice things...tragedy of the commons at its finest.

That’s a shame you guys are ripping out entire patches for your own greed. I know some of my patches are picked by other people and I combat that by contributing more mycelium to the patch so we all can have some. If you want your own patch take a tiny piece of myc and throw it on some agar or start from spore prints and you can stretch it into 100 qt jars in no times. Don’t destroy an entire patch because someone else also enjoys ovoids, how would they know it’s “yours”? Here I am getting upset when I accidentally take some stem butts with fuzzy feet and theres people out there ripping handfuls of mycelium so no one else gets them. Please be compassionate and have some etiquettecy when hunting.

Don't always do this, and certainly do spawn many more patches than i rip, most the time I don't even go in public places to pick anymore so they get left undisturbed. Nothing wrong with ripping a patch to start a larger one somewhere else. Even if you took all the mycelium the area is gonna be coated in spores and they will probably come back.

I literally use a electric LMG to shoot spores, I have colonized almost every major park and industrial plaza here.

This is the one I use in case anyone is interested

Just soak the gel beads in spore solution when you hydrate them

If you guys haven't gotten out there yet this week, go now. I don't know what happened, maybe the super high humidity sent things into overdrive, but these patches are going crazy

Well, I'm never going back to the one place in this whole area where they fruit, that I've found, and I only took myc from the only patch I found this season. So, I don't think this is a bad thing,as there are tons more mushrooms out there for people to find that live in that area

Here is my patch, and again sorry for offending anyone because I took a few handfuls of myceliium home.
