I'm mostly done building JCM's FC. One outstanding issue is the lid. The tub I bought had a clear lid, but the tub wasn't tall enough. So I switched to an extra tub I had that's the right height but has an opaque white lid.

If I use the white lid, will the light that comes through the many lid holes be enough? Is bright light important for pans?

I think it is. You can look for lights used in aquariums and put it inside the tub, taped or tied to the lid.

Apologies, I should to clarify: I will have the two lamps clipped to the tub that shine down onto the lid, like in JCM's writeup. It won't be lit only by ambient light.

Will that direct lighting through the holes be enough light, or still not sufficient?

Hmm well.. I tried different mixtures.
First i tried around 80% manure with 20% verm plus gypsum. Pasteurized with sous-vide stick at 73 degrees celsius. Took me about 2 hours to get substrate core temp to 73 degrees. Then i pasteurized for 2 hours.
I even tried pasteurizing for 12 hours..
A mix im trying now is 40% manure 40% straw pellets 20% verm and gypsum.
i tried different spawn sub ratios from 1:2 to 1:4.
Have been trying different cultures..
But same result.. loosing many trays on contamns.. Really frustrating.
I covered my trays with saran wrap and have been poking little holes for a little gas exchange.
Maybe i should provide more gas exchange?
I never had this many contamns with cubes..

Thank you very much for your help  !

Is your horseshit leeched? If not, try doing that. Soak it in water and then just drain the water and squeeze it out until the right moisture content, and THEN pasteurize.

Hmm that's not the problem then. Plant seeds is the last idea that comes to my mind which could be causing contams. Damaging grains is not a problem. The mycelium colonizes the inside as well.

I built me a shitty lil FC out of some aquarium shit and an SGFC I had laying around. Drilled a few more lines of inch and a quarter and inch and a half holes in bottom of the inner chamber so it's more like a basket above the water.
Been fucking around with it for a few days on some different aged spawn.

Moved a majority of this to my journal to not etch this in stone. till it fingered out. much better setups already public. N I'm giving up on this box fast for pans. greenhouse going up in the next few days and starting fresh. Have a few new batches finishing in dub tubs till then

I would try shopping with a trusted vendor for some good poo made for mushrooms. Sounds like you have spent some time and are frustrated. Spend some money. Then you will know if your technique is needing help. Also I would stick to a 50/50 mix. Straw nice and short about 1 inch. These guys like it fluffy and should outrun the tray with a clean culture. I also do like jcm and spawn to a bag then crumble to a tray. That way you know your 100!

It won't be sufficient imo. That why I recommend a light source that you can install inside the fc. Aquarium led lights are waterproof.
Or maybe it will be sufficient,... IDK... That's just my opinion.

I went ahead and took your advice and used a clear lid from the original tub. It's a bit too large, but it seems to be fine. Rh is staying around 95-97%.

Thanks for your input!

I think 73 is great, mine even jumps close to 80 when I'm not careful for short time, but doesn't tend to cause problems.

Yeah it’s slight overlay but still well within the acceptable range imo.

Thanks! Anything I should do about it? Add more casing on the overlay, or scrape it off? Or just leave it be?
