shoebox fermentation smell, lack of ge?
    #27338548 - 06/07/21 09:17 AM (11 days, 5 hours ago)

Hi,
I spawned some grains to a plastic container (not exactly shoebox type)with coir.
After 9 days i opened to have a look, noticed strong fermentation smell, nothing visible on the surface.
Noticed the container is quite sealed, would lack of fresh air/ge cause this fermentation smell?
Spawned some other regular type shoeboxes at same time and they seem to be coming along nicely.

your grain got a yeast or bacterial infection. you're smelling the grain rotting. did the spawn jar smell when you opened it?  most of the time those boxes are not air tight and you'll get plenty of gas exchange so i'm thinking your jar was sick before you spawned or maybe the box was dirty.

throw that one out or it will attract flies and they will get in all of your boxes. they are like honey bees and pollen only for trich spores.

Thanks,
i did smell the spaw jars and they had mushroom smell. I used a liner in the box, cleaned it with iso before putting in box.
But there must have been some issue there somewhere.
Cheers

It's not your box or your liner. If you're gettting contamination before your first flush, it's 99% the spawn.

Was this spores directly to grain?
What type of grains?
Do you know how to prep/hydrate them properly?
What's your PC cycle like?
How's your sterile technique?

I have a couple of other shoeboxes on the go, one from the same batch of grains is comming along nicely,
2 others from a different batch of grains is just starting to colonise, but slow, the spawn jars had sorta stalled also though.
Thanks
