New Hunt, need a lil ID help please.
    #2733909 - 05/26/04 09:57 PM (12 years, 6 months ago)

Hello everyone, I recently went on another mushroom hunt near sundown tonight. I found a few diffrent mushrooms, but some that i found i need some help IDing. I will try to privide you with all the information i know and some pictures, i labled them by numbers so it would be less confusing.

Location - Michigan
Time - Sunset
Weather - 70's / sunny

#1 - I found many bunches growing out of old cow droppings, the center of the stem is not hollow and the sides tend to fold up on the cap.

#2 - I found theyse on very old cow droppings, the center of the stem is hollow and the mushrooms usually tend to be smaller in size.

#4 & 5 - I found numbers 4 and 5 close togher, they are very large in size and i dont think they are active, i am just cerious if anyone knows anything about them.

Thanks all, and if you need more info just tell me, im sure i missed something.

You should really make a habit of taking spore prints of anything you want ID'd, it helps a lot in figuring things out...

I'm not very familiar with dung lovers, but #1 resembles pictures of Psilocybe coprophila I've seen, it is not an active species however, they should have purple spores if I'm right...

#2 looks like some type of Panaeolus, which would have black spores.

Are the things in #4 mushrooms?  They almost look like puffballs...

#5 looks like either Omphalotus olearius or some kind of gym, more info needed...  If they're Omphalotus they glow in the dark

Check out the sticky on how to describe things...

DH

DH I agree with all of your statements in the above post, the only one I disagree with is your statement about the 1st picture.
The mushrooms in the 1st picture are Pan Subbs.
Peace,
PF~

To the person who posted the image. Can you rescan and make a larger image of number 1 or email it to me larger and I will repost it. Everything is really to small to identify.

pfshroomer: you really shouldn't not use strong terms like ARE when you're identifying LBMs from fuzzy pictures with no sporeprint or description...  You don't know what they ARE and neither do I, without more info. Notice how I worded my response .  As far as them being pan subbs, do they look more like

and

or

I think they look more like the first, but it wouldn't be the first time I've been wrong, like I said, the dung lovers are not my forte

Peace,

DH

DH, they are not P. coprophila, that is a small mushroom not big like those.

Is that on manure or wood?

Mj, They could be Pan subbs but also could be an Acrocybe.

I wish you could scan a larger oimage and email it top me and let me crop the middle so I could observe that grouping of smaller mushrooms .

Mj

I'm not pissed at all, I just meant it's generally not a good idea to ID mushrooms definitively from pictures like that with no spore print or any other info, even if you're pretty sure. Without really good pics or descriptions, you can't be 100% when it comes to LBMs like those.  I admit they do look a bit more like subbs now the pic is blown up a little, but I'd still be surprised if they actually were, the spore print will tell though .

Would be nice to have something in the pics for scale...

DH

I dont believe the first ones are Pan. subbalteatus. I dont ever remember seeing them having those upturned edges before at maturity.

Looks more like a Stropharia of somesort, no?

Out of all the pan subbs Ive picked Ive never seen them turn up like that hardly ever, but it is possible.
There are some pics Ive saved that has got the edges turned up quite heavily like those in picture#1,if I can find them I will come back and post them.
peace,
pf~

The gills are not even black and ther eis no black spore deposits on any of the shrooms in the image which would have occured if they were a black spored species. I have Copelandias with black caps from spores bliowing int he manure on to them when the caps open.

mj

Those have no black in the images.

Well, I've seen Pan subbs with caps like that before... But those ain't no Pan subbs. If anything they're Agrocybe or Stropharia.

Doesn't look like anyhting active to me. Perhaps #2 might be, but we'd need a print to know.
