Where will they pin
    #2733793 - 05/26/04 09:03 PM (13 years, 4 months ago)

Alright I had a few colonized PF cakes and I didn't follow the PF Tek exactly and instead put the cakes in upside down with the vermiculite at the bottom in another jar with aluminum foil wrapped around the side. After 6 days in the terrarium, I check and there is absolutely nothing. I take off the foil to check for mold and there is tons of pins at the bottom where light doesn't even reach. Is it because the mushrooms like it there more or what? I ended up just flipping the cake in the same jar so now the vermiculite side with all the pins is facing up and doing nicely but I was just wondering why this happened?

if i understand you, you put the verm at the bottom of the jars??? that totally defeats the purpose. Its needed at the top.

No no the verm was at the top when the jars were colonizing but when I birthed it, I transfered it to another jar by sliding it out of the original one straight into another jar so the verm ended up getting flipped and on the bottom which I thought would be better because all the exposed mycelium is now at the top.

You've done everything right so far. Cakes tend to pin from the bottom. You might even try rolling your cake in verm or putting some verm on the top.
