Wood in master cultures.

So I've seen tounge depressors and tooth picks. But could I maybe put like 1 or 2 HWFP (hardwood fuel pellets/sawdust) in my agar mixture before sterilizing then just pour the slants?
And does it really have to be a slant? Could I just use a plate at that point?

Sounds like decent Idea, however keep in mind that tongue depressors aren't filled with all the resins that are in HWFP. I would boil and drain the wood pulp three or four times before attempting it just to be sure. Also, I would make sure that the HWFP are hardwood.

Like tree resins? What difference does that make?

I'm not sure if this is the reasoning, but could it be because of anti-fungal enzymes that trees produce? I believe that's why you should let your log rest a week or 2 after cutting it for gourmet logs before innoculating them. You need to let the bioactivity slow down/cease so the log doesn't fight the plug spawn. If that's the reasoning, I'm sure the pelletization process mostly denatures those.

If it's tannins/oils, that's another story, and I'm not sure if that would make a difference or not.

I think the wood in slants is more there for more surface area and to prevent the culture from drying out as fast, as the mycelium colonized throughout the wood would be in direct contact with/contains agar (water, nutes, etc.), and not exposed to the air in the tube/GE through parafilm. Kinda halfway between substrate and an agar plate.

I bet a HWFP per slant would work, but I would love to know more about all of this.
