Preventing agar boil over?
    #2604180 - 04/26/04 10:24 AM (19 years, 10 months ago)

I've been using a pyrex 1lt pouring jug with some success for sterilizing and pouring agar. It's boiled over more times than not i'm not sure if it's because it's wide mouthed or if my pc goes beyond 15psi. My pc has a weight and when it begins to vent strongly i turn down the heat and leave for 45mins. I've read weight type pc's shouldnt vent at all as that is a sign they are going beyond 15psi.
I usually just cover the jug with aluminium foil.

Don't fill it more than halfways and/or let go of the pressure more slowly if possible. Why the container should be too full is obvious, and if you let go of the pressure too fast the agar can start a heavy boil, because the boiling point is lowered while the temperature is still very high.
