No Pins...Possible contam? (PICs)
    #2733344 - 05/26/04 06:37 PM (13 years, 3 months ago)

I cased a few jars of colonized B+ and Cambodian with 50/50 verm/peat moss (oyster shells for pH) on 5/10. On monday I cold shocked this one because it hasn't grown at all really in the previous few days...

But still no pins. Then yesterday morning I noticed this little fuzzy thing that is scaring me (it got a little washed out in the flash, but it has a slight greenish hue to it)...

Does it look like a contam? If it is, would this explain why I'm not getting any pinning and what should I do about it? From the pictures I've seen, the casings look a little undercolonized to initiate pinning, but I figured since I hadn't observed any growth, that it was about time. The other casing is even less colonized and hasn't been cold-shocked yet but it's lack of growth makes me afraid of a contam lurking beneath its casing layer too...

hard to tell from the pic, but if you say it looks "greenish" then it may be bad news bears.

watch it closely - your casing container is clear - can you see any nasty lookin stuff in the substrate layer?

good luck

I suppose I could take off the aluminum foil that surrounds it and have a look. So if it is a contam should I try to bleach it or cut it out or what? This is my last chance to grow for a very long time so I'm not opposed to some more drastic measures in lieu of starting a new project.

Yeah, have a look and see. Do whatever you can to save it. diluted bleach, salt, H2o2... the whole 9.

If the substrate looks 'clean', then I'd wait it out.

You could always toss it outside too!

What's a typical dilution factor should I choose to go the bleach route?

Ok, little update:

I took the foil off and lo and behold, there was a layer of dried out berries at the bottom of the tupperware container.  I don't know if I cased too early or what but I'm pretty sure it stopped colonizing because it was pretty bone dry and I didn't see any contams.  So I took the casings out, scraped off the bottom layer of semi-colonized berries and put it back in the container.  It's soaking in water/H2o2 and in the fridge so hopefully the rehydration and cold-schocking will kick it into gear.

Any ideas on how long it might take for the mycelial network to recover from this trauma?  I'll be moving June 13th...think they'll be at least one flush by then?
Oh yea, and the B+ casing broke in half so there's two separate pieces floating around in the container now  :mad2:
