Jar Lids

Quick question (couldnt find a clear answer on the method I was reading)- anyone know how loose the jar lids should be once inocced or if the holes on the top should be sealed or not. Do you need air for it to fruit, or will it work with whatever air is sealed inside?

From what I have read the holes you poked in the jar lids should be sufficient for the cultivating stage. the vermiculite you put on top should buffer it from contaminates that may drift into the holes, so dont seal it up.

tighten them down before innoculation... they don't need to be loose except during cooking

I had the same question......about the holes that are poked in the jars, when there cooking and sterilizing, the foil covers the holes but what about after that, after you innoculate them, do the holes need to be covered, or can they be left loose?

I tighten mine up all the way...before pressure cooking....I dont see the point in tighten them when there hot after pressure cooking.....

As far as holes go....if you have a dry verm layer only i suggest letting it grow a bit with tape....then pull the tape. If you dont have a dry verm layer you need tyvek or polyfill...in that case I wouldnt use tape at all.

Of course you do need air to fruit...and you need air exchange to promote good incubating too

Hey Mike, I recall you suggesting that I flip my jar lids upside down in another thread so I don't need to worry about them being melted to the lids and being ruined while removing them. Will this still produce a good enough seal to keep contams out?

yes... the verm barrier is very good at keeping contams out as long as the spore load isn't extreme...

leave the foil on over the lids, and don't mess with any tape, because the sticky surface of the tape will attract contaminants and trap them right in the entrance of your jars where you don't want em...

I don't use the PF Tek, I work with grains.

for grain i recommend tyvek with foil covering... tyvek isn't foolproof though, so your area needs to be really clean
