Was the Oumuamua object an extraterrestrial artifact? * 1
    #27205406 - 02/14/21 12:15 PM (2 years, 11 months ago)

I just read Avi Loeb's book, Extraterrestrial: The First Sign of Intelligent Life Beyond Earth. Loeb was the longest tenured chair of the astronomy department at Harvard (2011-2020), and is currently Frank B. Baird Jr. Professor of Science at Harvard, as well as the director of the Black Hole Initiative and the Institute for Theory and Computation there. So he is clearly no kook.

It is his belief, given the bare evidence, that Oumuamua, which passed through the solar system in 2017, represented the first contact between humanity and an extraterrestrial intelligence. Some of the evidence is as follows:

The object matched no known asteroid or comet type ever catalogued;

The object deviated from a normal trajectory going past the sun -- it accelerated unnaturally with no ice or carbon exhaust typical of an occasional comet that deviates slightly;

It defies calculated statistics on the existence of possible random objects of interstellar origin;

It is much shinier/reflective than any known celestial object;

It gives off an unnatural heat signature;

And the spin rate of Oumuamua did not change as a result of its slight propulsion enabling a non-gravitational flight past the Sun, which is highly bizarre.

Dr. Loeb, among almost no others, believes the only scientific interpretation of the data requires us to conclude that Oumuamua was an alien object, although of course we cannot know its origin or purpose. The going theory is that it is a relic -- space junk -- that nevertheless is drawn to star systems for a flyby. I'm not sure whether or not to agree, but his case is very good.

Given some of the things listed above, calling it a weird comet seems a bit short of the mark. Clearly there is no way to know with available evidence, but I am convinced that it is a very real possibility that Loeb is right. If you're interested, the book cited is a good one.

Their craft defies humanities conception of propulsion.  It’s a common theme.  I figure there are multiple parties.

The shape of Oumuamua could create artificial gravity inside if it was spinning the right way

What a perfect craft to fly around space in, than one that looks like a random piece of natural space debris/rock?

Honestly, if I was an alien that was going to fly by Earth, and I knew how chaotic everything was on the planet, I would just make my ship look like space junk

Thing is, Oumuamua is massive. If it were aliens, it would be an entire ship for them to colonize somewhere...or they permanently live in there. They could do everything in there. I mean, it's 40 square football fields in size, but highly elongated.

40 football fields?  This guy has gone on at least several popular podcasts and has stated it is the size of 1 football field.  I just wonder where you get your figures from.  Even still it’s a big load unless it’s like paper thin.  On Rogan it sounded like they did not observe the unknown object directly?

He also says that the mysterious object was the first object ever to visit our vicinity in the solar system from outside the solar system.  That claim stood out to me.  And given the characteristics he rattles off, very intriguing.

So there is an object the size of 1-40 football fields behaving in bizarre and contrary ways and is the first object to ever visit our vicinity of the solar system from outside the solar system.  Question - how do they know it’s from outside the solar system?  Aside from the probability that it’s an extraterrestrial artificial craft

Yes, it is about one football field long. And they can tell it's an interstellar object from its trajectory.

Interstellar probe, like our Voyager. Just my guess

It’s certainly exciting to think so. But unfortunately we’ll probably never know.

Most certainly natural object. We would catch some transmission if it wasn't.

Also, from wiki:
In March 2021, scientists presented a theory based on nitrogen ice that ʻOumuamua may be a piece of an exoplanet similar to Pluto, from beyond our solar system.
