My main problems with bags going bad are dirty g2g innoculant or failure to seal adequately. Massaging bags can be rough on a weak seal. I use a cheap 5mm blue impulse unit and sometimes I have to finnagle a bit to get a proper seam. Occasionally I must reseal during a bag massage, but if done infront of the FFU the risk is minimal.
Just can't cut corners for efficiency, you'll end up losing time in the long run while you learn the lesson through failure.
Currently running wheat and no longer using the prestos daily, but might rock em for a few days to prep lots of masters mix really quick. Need a few dozen bags for oysters and kings. I put my wild oyster on grain yesterday and I'm excited to expand into gourmets fully.
Appreciate you sharing your experience, Quirk

LME is light malt extract. I was just pointing out that they specify dry malt in your link because liquid malt is a thing too but a bitch to work with.
I personally like a LME with a bit of black strap molasses added for flavor

Spacebaby that looks like the agar boiled up over the rim.

Actually, that makes total sense. Last time I made agar, I made 800 ml LMEA, 800 ml PDpeptoneA and 800 ml Oats Water Agar. That last threw half it's volume on both botttles into the steam. I used the 200 ml in one and tried to ressurect the other bottle with 200 ml H2O, and 4 g ea LME and agar. So, ya, probably boil over, but is the black shit mold?
Anyway, is that cooked or contaminated, please, A.k.a.? Should I toss the plates I poured or see how the clone does on it [I can always transfer away from any contam these days, unless it's plate-wide.]
20210513 transfer one of many successful IMHO

People still heat treating coir or did eat convince anyone else to just hydrate and spawn? Been away for a while but got 6 tubs looking good from bricks of coir that have been in a garage for 14 months. All I did was put the bricks in the kitchen sink and run hot water over them till hydrated. Then leave it in the sink for the excess water to drain off. Something that used to be a 2 day process took me 45 min start to finish. I can say after that I’ll never boil water for coir again.

Don't overdo the blue, use too much and the mycelium hates it and looks puffy.
Oh, good call Sandman, I used 10 drops of blue because less looks green with McCormick and ya puffy!

You'll love the yeast pit, I still and will always use boiling water. I feel the myc likes cooked coir more than just hydrated. I need to run a side by side. I did run a side by side with jiffy 50/50 and myc liked the pasteurized side better.

I boiled water to hydrate a whole 5kg block in my igloo cooler recently. Wanted to see how fluff it could get or something. Problem, there was insufficient space for the whole block to expand. I will not be boiling water for coir anymore
I like to measure my substrate materials to be consistent. Hot water and large amounts of coir surface area seems to be the best combination. I'm considering cranking the hot water heater a few degrees to get a few more tubs done in a session, but otherwise my method is pretty settled.
3mil clear liner stuck with soap, 800g crumbled coir, add 1gal hot ass tap water, let cool, fluff, add 1qt verm mix thoroughly, remove top layer mass, add spawn and mix thoroughly, tamp evenly, add top layer, tamp evenly and slightly extra on the sides.
Got a healthy Avery's Albino canopy developing its pinset fully. Pics to come.

I am taking my new toy for a test drive today to see how long the water will last cooking at 212*F. The pot has a capacity of 30 gallons. I filled it up to the 7 gallon mark. If I can get 12 plus hours of steam, I will be cooking a bunch of sawdust blocks tomorrow.

Since I plan on growing this pe culture in sealed bags, I was thinking about trying out supplemented shredded corncob bags also.

you guys got any good scale recommendations? i’m looking for one that will measure down to the hundredths place. the one i have now is annoying to use for microdosing because it barely registers anything under a half gram

AWS 100g X 0.01g pocket scale ~$15USD on Amazon.
Got a capsule filler press? 00 caps fit like .5g IIRC. Good for microdosing, not great for interdimensional exploration.

Cheese and crackers that was a long week. Got 3 days off in a row. A girl from work wants to hang but imma blow her off and work in my lab. Primal has inspired me to create a wheat prep tek. First LC's looking sexy, gotta make a few more. Melmak T1's are fuzzin' up nice, gotta make more. Ape and PE tubs are pinning and looking rather boner inspiring. Concentrates are on sale. Gonna be a good few days
