I rolled the dice on the Amazon FFU a month ago and it was very well packaged and shipped in a couple days. Must have something to do with where it's being shipped from/to. Absolute game changer for me. I quit for awhile because SAB work is sweaty and this is worth every penny so far.
Did the lighter test a few times and I can't actually tell if it's 100% laminar flow or not but I've poured 40 plates a couple weeks ago and did dozens of transfers with no contamination. Can air flow even less than 100% laminar?

2' x 4' $250 local pickup only in Phoenix. Looks like a great deal.

Funny, it was 250 plus 150 shipping. Guess they didn't bother to check freight cost beforehand. I'm just happy someone got such a great deal!

I βaccidentallyβ bought a 2ft x 2ft FloCube today. I have to keep telling myself it will be worth it. Iβm so excited. I was going to go with the Amazon FFU but said 4 extra benjaminβs never hurt anything.

Any tips or tricks on setting them up? Mine has a latch that helps to hold the filter in place on what will be the bottom. I plan to cut a piece of wood with a hole cut out to make the filter level. With normal work, do these things ever tip over, is there any need for vertical or horizontal support?
Any videos on basic sterile techniques using FFU?

Yoshi, take a look at how Rev set his up:
https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/27545976#27545976
I used this as inspiration, but I donβt expect to ever need to move mine so I simply wound duct tape on itself and adhered 1βx2β lengths. Very stable.

Hereβs what I did to mine. I used foam under it to eliminate vibration, vs wood transfering any vibration to my stainless table. https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/28241489#28241489

Thank you guys for the links. Those are some great mods SPG, nice craftsmanship too! I was thinking of adding a layer of foam on top of a wooden base but it all just raises the filter face. I'll probably just use straight foam like yours. I like the filter add on and shroud design too, Ill probably make both of those. My "lab" is a folding table that gets set up between the dining and living room. I often have people walking by while I'm trying to work so I think the shroud will be very helpful.

I'm on the fence. But I have a 1x2 flowhood I built over COVID already for culture work.
Inoculating bags and doing G2Gs with a bigger hood would save me a lot of fuckery though.
I'll see what my girlfriend thinks when she wakes up since she pays all the bills lol

Maybe you can sell your homemade one to offset the cost of the upgrade.
Though, since you already have a small one... Maybe you need to hold out for a deal on a 2x4!

Has anyone tried a vibration-sensitive hours meter on a FFU?
They are made for small engines so they may be unable to detect FFU fan vibration, but at less than $10 I may give it a try.
(I was surprised that I could not find a simple plug-in pass-through hours meter for AC appliances.)

You can get smart plugs that have software to track at least the power usage. "Time on" would be a simpler metric, so you'd think one of these smart plugs would tell you that.
But yeah, I guess there's no simple device just for that. If you buy it, let us know if it works.

I spent way too long today looking for some kind of pass-through plug with a nonvolatile power-on timer, I tell you hwat. I could use it for a few things, not must my new FFU. I found all kinds of options for panel-mount meters but by the time you put it in an enclosure you've got some big nasty thing. Hopefully the vibration-sensitive meter will work... I will report back.

What purpose would it serve?
