Childhood
    #2732590 - 05/26/04 04:04 PM (12 years, 6 months ago)

Humans are the only species on the planet with a gap between birth and adolescence. If humans are spiritual beings then what is the purpose of childhood?

What can we learn from this state?

We can learn not to expect but to accept. Children seem pretty happy to me

Humans are the only species on the planet with a gap between birth and adolescence.

I'm not sure what you're basing this on. Where did you hear this?

If humans are spiritual beings then what is the purpose of childhood?

I would say the main purpose is to provide for a smoother transition from the pre-birth world to this one. It would be one hell of a shock to be thrown into the sensory onslaught of this planet without an innocent stage which serves as a buffer.

Without the buffer of childhood, people would view the world as alien and threatening. When you are exposed to it without being equipped with the proper tools the world intrudes upon your awareness with no defense. People who, for whatever reason (i.e. childhood trauma) don't have those tools, tend to become mentally ill over time.

i believe many species have childhooods. especially mammals.

i understand your point though. we can observe many quality traits in kids. i love children, their so much fun to be around, and so cute. ive never seen children hate eachother based on culture or skin color or anything so superficial as that. they dont know hate yet i guess...

honestly, i dont know why humans would be so much more spiritual than any other organism.
regardless, children are special, and i enjoy being around them.
they are relatively carefree and dont have baggage.

if you can't find the truth right where you are, where else do you expect to find it?

this is the purpose

"honestly, i don't know why humans would be so much more spiritual that any other organism."

Who says they are? Animals don't create religious symbology or ritual (some people disagree with that, though), but then animals don't have well-developped manipulative tools like hands, for the most part. A cow may very well exist in a state of continual religious extasy, for all I know. I kinda think they do, as matter of fact. That's why they're so chill.

Don't worry, I'm wrong.
