Quick Tip: Wrapping Masters For Peace of Mind
    #27314123 - 05/18/21 06:13 PM (3 years, 7 months ago)

hello friends, hope everyone is doing well

just wanted to share a quick tip with you all.

i really enjoy 1 piece lids, since you can simply hold the top in place and rotate the jar to remove the lid, greatly reducing the chances of introducing contams by prying off something metal (or even twisting a 1 piece lid, since the edge you touched would eventually be over the open jar removing it this way, even if only briefly)

for added peace of mind, i started wrapping cling wrap around the top half of my master jars to seal the gap between the lid and the jar. this is to prevent any dust or other contam vectors from hiding in that gap while it sits on a shelf (and possibly ending up falling into a bag later), much like wrapping a petri dish in parafilm.

i wipe them down with alcohol and a cleanroom cloth before using anyway, but that gap is hard to wipe

of course having this gap exposed to open air is not likely to cause problems, but this removes one more possibility. i realize this is bordering on OCD but it only takes a second and makes me more comfortable storing them in less clean areas

here is an example:

I do the same. I do not trust the one piece lids.

Also I put a cheap non zip plastic sandwich bag over the jar. I write the date and any info on the bag so I can keep track of that spawn jar.

The bag has to fit loose so the filter can do It's gas exchange.

thats a cool idea

ive never had one of the no leak lids actually fail on me, but its easy to imagine the gap harboring dust or something, so it satisfies my ocd to wrap them.

those white lids dont seal nearly as well

Those heat shrink band looks good. I wonder If you can apply them while the jars are still hot when they come out of the pc.

My concern with lids is the gap between the jar and thread. If I was a mold spore the gap would be like the Grand Canyon..

My alcohol soaked paper towel wold never even get close to wiping clean that area of the jar.

Yes I agree It's prudent to seal the lid to the jar..
