Covering Your SAB When Not Working

Hey there shroomites,
I was going to put this in my newb question thread but I figured maybe this could be a somewhat engaging conversation? Maybe im wrong and its just another boring newb question and if so I apologize but I was wondering,
Do YOU cover your SABs arm holes when not in use? I personally havent been. I did when I started but then I thought that having to remove the paper was likely causing more turbulent air than just not having it there in the first place. Whats your thoughts?

i donโt cover the holes unless itโs gonna be sitting unused for like an hour+ so i can come back to it or if iโm doing prints in it & canโt have it just chillin out in my room

See I have my unused agar plates and blank petris in it... should I have it covered then? o,o

hmmmm i donโt really use petris so i canโt help there. if youโre using pasty plates they should be fine, idk about unwrapped petris though. i would assume that as long as you arenโt opening the door to the room or turning on fans you should be fine?

I don't cover the holes but I have my SAB up against a wall so I turn the holes towards the wall when I'm not using it. Like most people I started off in overkill mode cleaning the SAB, misting it, cleaning anything in the area, showering, etc. I even had it in a trash bag when I wasn't using it for a little bit. But, I'm pretty lazy so now I just roll up to my dry SAB with gloves on and I haven't had an increase in contamination.
Relevant thread that changed how I use a SAB - https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/24932780/fpart/2/vc/1#24932780 (thanks mushman)

I just put up plastic wrap on the holes. Mine never moves. Once a week I pick it up to spray lysol and wipe it down but other than that ive stopped spraying cuz so many TCs dont seem to think its needed.

I don't cover my armholes based on the following, but I could easily be convinced otherwise because my understanding of thermodynamics sucks. Doesn't still air in a box open on one side resist moving currents (like a car on the highway with the passenger side window down)? Doesn't covering/uncovering those holes just create turbulence in an otherwise relatively stable environment?

after each session in the SAB I put it away, so I don't really leave anything in there over long periods of time - the only exemption being when I pour plates I'll cover the holes while they set with some paper + scotch tape but those magnets seem like a way better option lol

The only time I covered the arm holes on my SAB is to let freshly poured plates to cool overnight. I just covered them with a t-shirt that was not worn out of the washer/dryer. I did the same thing without the shirt overnight and did not notice any difference.
TLDR: I did not notice any tangible benefits from covering the arm holes after I poured plates in my SAB. I have been using a hood for the past like 8 months or so though.

I never do, I just wipe it thoroughly with 70% ISO before and after use and store it in a clean closet. Been using the same SAB for quite a while now but it always works just fine despite being kinda worn out and a little dirty from years of use.

Alright. Are we talking about storing SABs that have sensitive material in them or just storing them between use?

Both but for me personally I have sensitive material in mine. Its static so I figured its the best place to store em
I actually just bought some of those magnets linked above xD

Ah I see, yeah I'd cover somehow if you have sensitive stuff in there I guess.

Ok Stubb how 'bout this...I have a piece of cardboard that blocks both holes. When I remove it, I slide the cardboard up or sideways parallel to my SAB. I can't see how there's any disturbance in the force that way.

"I use plastic cups used close pvc pipes"
This sentence combined with the whiskey still making it's way through my brain.... is a bad combo.

Gently covering the arm holes with anything is a good idea when sensitive material is chillin. Doesn't really matter what you cover it with so long as it is not made of shit and you put it on nice and gently.
As far as long term SAB storage, I just leave it somewhere. Right now I think my SAB is covered in filth and the window has fallen off. Don't really use it anymore so it just sits there and falls apart.... like my first wife.

LOL !
It is probably more about my english than it is about the whiskey. English is my third language and i made up the post in a hurry. So my apologies
Those red "cups" are normally used to cover up pvs pipes when a house is under construction, to prevent debris from falling in them.
They are easy to clean and really cheap, so i thought it is a pretty good option.
Enjoy your evening

Seems reasonable, I'd buy that for a dollar.
