Shredding BRF cakes to Bulk, is it worth it ? or should I just put them in my SGFC?
    #27313484 - 05/18/21 08:58 AM (3 years, 7 months ago)

Hi there,

I was thinking I'd shred some of my upcoming BRF Jars into a shoebox tek with coco coir substrate. I don't own a pressure cooker so grain spawn is a step beyond me for now.

Some people Ive asked say dhredding cakes to bulk is a great idea , guarantees more crops, larger surface area for growth, less maintenance than a SGFC , you'll never look back , etc , etc ,etc.

Then others have advised me not to saying why would you risk colonized BRF cakes ready to fruit by shredding them to bulk in contaminant prone shoeboxes only to wait another 2 to 3 weeks for a yield similar to what you might have got if you had just fruited them as cakes.

what do you guys think? Do BRF cakes just belong in the SGFC?

J

Always a good idea to spend them to shoeboxes.

But keep in mind, a brf cake can handle, hide, and cut down bacteria very well,
so it will produce handled as a cake, even if it`s bacterial.
If you spend a bacterial to bulk, you spread it out and things may go south.

My only grow has been dry shredding 4 BRF cakes to an unmodified monotub. It's gone phenomenally well so far! I used ne coir brick per 4 cakes and hydrated it with boiling water. It expands more than you can imagine. Fruiting also came much faster than I expected,  considering it took 1.5 months for my cakes to colonize and maybe a week or two to fruit. I probably have harvested 10 dry grams from tub 1 and tub 2 is just getting started. There was going to be a tub 3 but I ended up with 4 bacterial jars and I decided I didn't need to try and save them.

Just my two cents but it worked for me!

I’d do shoeboxes for sure.

There’s no risk, anybody saying shoeboxes are contamination prone has no idea about the basics of how cult works.

If you have healthy colonized cakes, or any spawn, then you don’t need to worry about contamination anymore.

Personally I don’t like fruiting cakes, shoeboxes are way easier.

Awesome , I hope to do similar. What size tub did you use for 4 BRF cakes (1/2 pin jar cakes I assume)?

10 dried grams does not sound like a lot to me for 4 BRF cakes though. I mean I harvested about 5 grams per cake of Cubes GT in my SGFC last summer. But that said people who I showed pictures to of those cake flushes said that they were insane, might have been good genetics of the strain.

For four cakes you should be getting around 30g dry with an average culture in a shoebox.
