What is the benefit/point of breaking up grain spawn when its 30% colonised?
    #27312603 - 05/17/21 01:50 PM (3 years, 7 months ago)

What is the benefit of breaking up a jar at the 30% stage?

I realize that it creates more inoculation points but are there other benefits, like making the mycelium stronger as a result of being broken up?

Just distribution for faster colonization.

also to check the recovery. if you shake and nothing happens then your spawn was fucked..

Thank you

I'm guessing you guys shake (gently) just enough to  break the bigger colonized area into roughly inch sized pieces?

Or should we shake it up a bunch like when spawning to bulk?

The later, break up as good as possible. the better you break it up the more inoculation points you get.

Ok, that makes sense. That would also explain why I had some grows that failed when I went to bulk, despite looking fully colonised in the jars.

No you want to completely break it all up when you shake.

If it’s a decent clean culture it’ll explode after you shake it. If you just leave it without shaking it’ll easily take three times longer to colonize.

I'm not following your logic here.

I guess OP had some jars visibly colonized on the outside, with a hidden contam inside, or not fully colonized.
He didn`t shake up a single time, so just sent it to bulk without recovery control.

Ah, yes. I see. Well, that could indeed lead to problems.

Minor hijack because it's relevant and I don't want to start a whole thread to ask: if growth is healthy, how long does it usually take for cube myc to grow to 30%? If the growth is slow (but not stalled) what might that indicate? :takingnotes:

If growth is slow, i`d shake earlier to hopefully speed it up.
Maybe a competitor, maybe genetics.
Usually i shake if i see myc growth in dimension of my fist.
I really don`t care if it`s 20,30,40 or 50%, that can vary.
But i like it early on.

That's true. I have had mixed success with some grows. I was not shaking at all and just letting the whole jar colonize and then going to bulk.  Some of those jars fruited after going to bulk. But then again, some of the jars looked fine with no signs of contam and then did not colonise the bulk substrate.

So now I am trying some grows by shaking at 30% allowing the myc to recover and then take them to bulk. Lets see how that works out.
