Mould, bruising or something else?
    #27312411 - 05/17/21 10:55 AM (3 years, 7 months ago)

Hi

So this is maybe the 3rd lot of PF cakes I’ve got out to fruiting and these guys started pinning invitro so I popped them straight in the fruiting chamber without a dunk and roll.

Blue(green?) marks have appeared after a few days and look a bit like veins. Seem to be spreading but very slowly and also seem to be more on one side of each cake (south if that matters!)

Had this before with the last batch and ended up throwing them away as guessed it was mould.

The cakes looked perfectly find before fruiting them.

Mushrooms are growing but they are smaller than past attempts and few and far between.

Also one or two of the mushrooms seemed blue/green

Now my natural jnstinct would tell me this is mould but I would hate for month of waiting to go down the pan

So my question is, looking at these pics, does this look like a mould and if so are the mushrooms safe to eat (I guess not!)

And if not, what is it?

Thanks in advance

Just bruising, probably due to being too dry. I'd still do a dunk and roll just to keep them from drying out so you aren't having to mist a ton

So I’ve got them out to dunk and here’s another closer picture

:whathesaid:

And trim your foil to closely fit the cake.  Excess foil will block the cool moist air that should be coming through the perlite and stimulating pinning.

Have you ever noticed moist air being wicked out of the perlite surface yourself? A square centimeter of aluminum has hever stood in the way of mushrooms forming and never will. Perlite is ultimately very bad as a source of humidity because of its structural property to put it bluntly. Just Google perlite and you'll understand why it's not a good option for this purpose. Gl

Edit: oh yeah don't worry there are alternatives out there now it's 2021 baby look up Water Tub

My SGFC was losing about a quart a week, so yeah I would think that the moisture is evaporating somewhere.  I'm not saying the cakes will die due to the extra foil in that pic, but it always seemed to promote a more even and larger flush when I trimmed them.

I don't hold SGFC's on any kind of pedestal, but they worked OK when I was doing PFTek.  I constantly fought issues with airflow in my house causing problems and eventually tossed it and moved on.

If I was going to do it again for the first time with PFTek, a water/coco tub is the way I would go.
