Substrate preservation in later flushes

How can I help my trays survive longer into later flushes? I have a few trays that I need an opinion or contam ID on. Each one is on its 2nd-3rd ish flush, (basically spawning a few fruits here and there). What is a usual volume for a 2nd or third flush? Does it help if you pick before they drop spores? Is it bad to uproot the fruits Rs that than cut? Any advice helps, thanks

Later flushes yields are really dependent on the cleanliness of your spawn and the culture. I've had cultures that put out almost as much in the 2nd flush as the first and some that are more one and done and aren't really worth keeping around after a single flush. So yeah, it depends but I don't think it's really ever worth keeping something past 2nd or 3rd flush. Shit's gotta end at some point, might as well start new.
I know there's been some discussion about whether picking before spore drop has any effect but I don't think it makes that big of a difference. Same with cutting vs pulling, I usually prefer to cut if the fruits don't come cleanly off the surface but sometimes they do and that's nice, not a big deal to damage the surface a bit pulling fruits but I'd try to avoid ripping huge chunks of substrate out with the fruits.
I'd work on getting clean spawn and maintaining surface conditions throughout later flushes as well as making sure the sub has enough water in later flushes, bottom watering if necessary. Your tubs look very dry.
Here's a thread on identifying clean spawn: https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/27187543

It’s looking pretty dry but after your 3rd flush I wouldn’t expect much out of it. You’re just going to get a few tough SOBs trying to push through. I usually hydrate my sub once it’s on later flushes like that, so either pour water under it and let it sit for a while and pour the rest off or submerge it. Some will tell you not to do that so just take my words with a grain of salt. It’s worked for me mostly but not might work for you. Also try and get a few going so you don’t have to try and squeeze out every last fruit you can from one tub because it’s just going to contam eventually. And it’s nice just to be able to start over clean and great great flushes most times if you’re going to have something around the house.

Those look pretty dry, maybe too dry for mold to really get a foothold, you could try a good soaking. My tubs have to pay their rent to keep space on the shelf, if There not putting out good volume and are taking space that could be used for another tub then they got tossed. If I don’t have anything to take their place I might let them sit a little longer, or rehydrate or whatever it takes, if they are just plain spent they go. If they show any mold they get tossed. Best thing that works for me is good hydration at spawning, if it’s good they typically go two good flushes without having to do much, maybe a spray here and there. I cut them out, some people have worried about the stumps contaminating, I’ve never had that problem, and it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to me. Definitely have had some cultures pull out pretty clean and neat, and if it’s a nice wall to wall canopy I’ll pull out a corner just so I can get my hand and scissors underneath the fruits.
