I for one, am enjoying your updates on the maitake. Cool mushroom to cultivate at home, no doubt.

Anyone work with MS prints?
I was about to dive back through the ones I successfully grew. On my last slants of enoki and wine caps and getting nervous I won't fruit.

Loving the maitake updates.
I apologize if you said earlier in the thread, is this masters mix or some other hwfp blend?
I've still got maitake on grain and dowels, will be trying again at some point.

sendmehummus said: The Hens are steadily growing. Some nice frond formation has begun, made it to the final phase! Would def grow these again, the flavor of cultivated maitake is out of this world. Also, wild maitake is one of the hardest mushrooms to clean bc of how intricate the fruiting body is. This makes everything much easier.. sorry for all the maitake updates but I dont have anything else going right now. The Hen bags have all my shelves occupied so its all I have to share!

How long have those been growing? Do they grow straight off the grain or do they need to be mixed with substrate?
I am trying figure out what the main factors as to why I see so few maitake grows

They need hardwood, generally supplemented.
They are one of the more difficult I think due to their strict temp requirements and long consolidation time. Stamets mentions in his book that the parameters are nearly the opposite of end of the spectrum as for oysters. You can't always grow them in the same FC as other gourmets because they need the 60° temps steadily for a long time before primordia will form.
****
I Cloned a grocery store oyster to agar, went to LC, and inoculated some spaghetti sauce jars with sterilized straw.
The idea is to use them as FAE testers in some fcs I am working on.
I was surprised and pumped when this pin popped out appearing to have a blue head. Didn't expect blue oyster.

My inoc date was 4/25/21, but the colonization was very aggressive and did not take much longer than oysters. Having your brains (primordia) form then takes a little less than a month after full colonization. As for the temps and and humidity honestly these have been incredibly easy to take care of and fruit. I have my maitake shelf in my bedroom where I run my AC at night, but during the day these bags would experience temp swings into the High 70's and even Low 80's and it didnt have any hinderance on growth. Im also not even fruiting these in a chamber, just open air misting them a few times a day and they are growing spledidly (getting huge). Im going off my experience with wild maitake and I know for a fact that they can handle high temp swings and periods of low humidity. I knew that at least having one cold (60 degree) cycle at night and intermittent misting would be juat fine for them. I think alot of ppl avoid it bc they dont want to break out of their Oyster comfort zone? There is a misleading notion on the internet that maitake takes absurdly long to cultivate but from LC to Fruiting Id say this has taken approximately 2.5x longer than Oysters.. which isnt so bad. I mean Im eating sheepshead in July, WORTH IT. Definitely growing again.
Two of my star bags yesterday morning, also some delish oysters I spotted driving home from work (didnt have a bag to collect them lol)

Anyway I highly suggest growing maitake to anyone, super easy just takes a little more patience. It was fun seeing stages of this mush that are normally hidden under leaves and forest debris.

Well I think you have a good culture for cultivation. I made a couple bags a week for about 10 weeks and ended up with 25 bags that were all scarecrows, no brains. They would blob but the blobs never turned into fruiting material, it stayed white and then would stop growing.
I'm really glad you had success tho and it's very motivating to try again so than you much for sharing.

Im curious what your spawn rate was? When I try a new mush I do a full qt for the first 4 bags that come out of the PC. Complete overkill but thats the point, bc if all others fail its nearly impossible for the full qt bags to also fail. Then I did the rest of the bags with 1/4 qt of spawn and they also are all producing well. Some would say even 1/4 qt of spawn is too much but I really dont care. Spawn is super easy to get going and I like results.

Yeah I was using 1qt per bag. What spawn rate are you seeing best results with?

Youre a good friend @gabbk !! Im sharing lots of oysters with friends after today.
@deadmandave : The full qt bags literally exploded, they were the first to go into fruiting. The 1/4 qt bags are also doing great and I actually just bumped them into fruiting today they just took a bit longer (2-3 weeks longer) to develop brains. I cant give a very good answer until I see the fruit sizes I get from the 1/4 qt bags. But here are the fruits (still growing) from full qt. Taken just a few minutes ago. Also including some pics from todays Oyster harvest (I know not cultivation but I couldnt help myself).

Omg hummus those maitakis are awesome. Just got a new culture of those started actually. I'll be doing a really low spawn rate so I'm sure they'll take forever. But it's mostly persy.

Do you need the supplements of hardwood in your spawn or will they grow on traditional grain? My growing area is on the colder side since I live in like a fog bank every day of the year.
Would a wood loving substrate be appropriate maitaki?
Thanks for all the input all.

Jesus hummus those are gnarly. Five stars. Mine look like dog turds in comparison.
Cocaine, wood is best for maitake. You probably will have poor results fruiting from pure grain so sawdust is key. I doubt supplements are vital but they might increase speed and yield. Just use a full quart of spawn per five pound bag. Where are you located? Sounds dreamy...
