Beautiful but yea they're way too slow unless you have a ton of extra space. Same with chestnuts. I'd love to grow them but can't justify it when trying to maximize profits

Thanks Strom. Yeah space is something I don’t have a lot of currently. Would love a few more fast fruiting species to play around with though.

So an update on the caterpillar that ate the cordyceps mycelium. I've since read that eating contaminated food is one way that caterpillars can get infected with cordyceps. So after spending the night on the cordy culture, it was moved to a jar with moist coir to burrow and twigs to climb and leaves to eat. For the first 2days it ate a surprising amount. Next day appeared to be sleeping. Now it is definitely dead and growing mycelium. Not sure what to expect from here, I'll update weather or not it fruits or oranges up.

Nice tub @trippleblack. I did a few mono that I harvested last week. I got some fruits that looked like I took a cast of my thumb, but not a nice carpet like that. Hoping a clone will produce better.
Here is a weird agar offshoot on a lion's mane clone cup I just noticed:

I got 20 of these things, so I got 5 for each culture. The LC wasn’t as concentrated as I would have liked, but I know I got some mycelium into each one.

Three cultures from AP gold and one labeled as Asian commercial strain.

I poked some breathing holes in the lid and used a piece of paper towel under it to keep gnats out. I lost the handful I inoculated last time to them gnats. Now a week or so to incubate before introducing to light.

ag, some great strains.. i have several beast tubs fruiting and my favorite "...5x9" -which is the tub above.
i heard growing on insects as you are produce much more cordycepin, supposedly due to the high content of protein and specifically oleic acids; drop an update when you get fruits.

I’ve dug a bit into it, the bugs that were tested showed the ones with higher fat content produced more of the desired compounds, and the oleic acid content seems to be key for higher cordycepin production. Funny how silk worm was relatively low in the production, but it’s used in some commercial farms in Asia since they’re readily available from the silk industry. I’m thinking of using some wax worms at some point, readily available and high in fat. I’m going to prep some rice jars to noc with this batch of LC, and I’m going to add some olive oil to the nutrient mix since it’s high in that fatty acid and I’ve read some positive results with small amounts.
I’ve seen signs of life up to 3-4 days after inoculation. Not sure if they’re still alive at all after that, but they don’t wiggle anymore. Looking back to last years pics, it’s going to be close to 3week before they’re ready to fruit. I injected .05-.1 ml of LC into the head section using an insulin needle. It’s going to need to grow to fill the body cavity then start to protrude out of the exoskeleton. I have a mini fridge so I can keep these going through the summer this time.

I think information about pine pellets for mushroom growing should be updated.

Conditions can be better but the potential is there. 20% bran supp.

I haven't used exclusively pine to my knowledge but I've never used hardwoods and never had a problem. I think heat and pressure from the processing cooks off the antifungal oils.

So the caterpillar seems to have stalled . It covered with myc then collapsed. The myc did not spread to the moist coir nor did it sporlate or turn color. No idea what it is, the color looks off for cordy myc. So calling it a fail.
Here is some success (grain and egg broth):

I had the same results when I inoculated the caterpillars when they were in the final stages before pupating. Militaris usually fruits from the pupa stage of the hosts. I’m thinking the larva initially gets infected (small inoculation) while burrowing into colonized soil, then it continues to pupate and the mycelium colonizes while it’s dormant. That or the mycelium in the burrow infects the pupa before the outer casing has a chance to harden.
