You're probably be better off getting tyvek. And it would have to be the .2 micron spawn bags not the .5ug fruiting bags. People reuse tyvek, I'm sure you could get away with it if you were careful, but if your siliconing them you would want a real SFD. A SFD is a synthetic filter disc, not just a filter patch like on the bags. They are a completely different materials, the sfd are like 1/8" thick and are said to last a lifetime from fungi.com, they also have the best deal that I could find ,if you buy in bulk at least. But if you cut up one for jars you could make like ten lids. Just have to keep an eye on the silicone. Ide say try tyvek if you want to switch from poly and save money. I did for a while but I never reused them.

Makes sense. Thanks for the detailed response QM. I just need to order some SFDs and knock out a ton of lids one rainy day.

Yeah I use tyvek when I don't feel like spending on SFD's. I don't think the filter patch that's on bags would last more than a couple PC cycles, they're so thin.

I think this guy is just about ready to harvest. It's a different variety of lions mane than the one I just grew from a kit. This one is on my first round of homemade bags using LC inoculated millet and 5lb wheat bran supplemented hardwood sawdust blocks. It's growing fractal like teeth rather than individual. It looks really neat!
When is the best time to harvest? I'll be cooking and eating it, so I'm interested in best time for an ideal meal, not necessarily maximizing growth for any medicinal qualities.... if that makes a difference

I harvest when. The teeth hit about 1/4 inch in length. I would harvest those if it were me. Just tried frying thin slices of battered lion's mane last weekend. Was awesome!

I went ahead and harvested It's extremely lighter and spongier than I was expecting. Is this from my growing environment or genetic? I was thinking it looked a little toothy early on, so I increased FAE. I've currently got my blocks sitting in a martha chamber with humidity set to 88 and an intake fan running for 5 minutes every 2 hours. It was every 4 hours initially.

That's from lack of FAE, more air will give them the denser quality you're looking for.

Thanks for the replies to my lion's questions. I've increased my FAE and the newest growth on the newer blocks look like they're growing much tighter. I'll keep dialing my tent in.

Now, I have another question! I've got a king oyster block that's growing well. I think the largest mushroom is just about ready. The cap looks like it's starting to stretch. Will the smaller mushrooms keep growing? Or will they finish at the same time as the larger one, flushing out like cubes?

I think they're usually done about the same time since it's the same culture not MS, but you can always leave em an extra day to see.

That makes sense...I keep forgetting that the mycelium is the main structure and the mushrooms are just fruiting bodies. They're not really individuals growing independently. So they should all be on the same time line. The pins all came in over a couple days, so they should finish their growth cycle similarly. Thanks for helping me think things over
