Darn you dave, your piopinnis always looks so cobsistent and tasty! Good job. So when people say them let them pin in the bag before fruiting, that happens in your colonizing room right?
How tight do you guys pack your steamers?

Yeah exactly. I have a few bags ready to fruit I'll take some pics when I put them in.
I pack my steamer comfortably to the top that used to mean 40 2kg bags but I just switched fuel pellets and without doing anything else different I can fit an extra row of bags - eight more. I'm down. I don't want to press them in too hard because I think that's how Strom broke the bottom out of his plastic barrel.

Nice looking oysters p9. Is poplar oyster p. Populinis?
What's your substrate recipe for shiitakes, deadman? I poured some spawn into masters mix and wonder if I screwed up and should've gone 100% HWFP. And for pinks do you do masters too?

Where are you getting soy hulls and what price?
I'm using 20% bran with fuel pellets in all my blocks.
Here are my a.a. right before I introduce them to the fc. Plus a bonus chestnut

I get them from a local 'organic agricultural specialist' shop, they've even got a little section for mush cult supplies. 50# for $30, not sure if that's a good deal, I just wanted to try them out. I knew I should've grabbed some bran too... Man chestnuts look so fun to fruit.
Well hopefully my shiitakes do ok with masters mix. Apparently TR Davis from Earth Angle (guy who made masters mix) uses it for everything _but_ shiitakes, lol. We'll see. Think I finally found the video I was looking for:
He runs 20% bran like you do, but I guess masters can work..

Yeah we're fucked in the pnw trying to get soy hulls. $30 is a travesty
I think your shiitake will be fine, maybe a few mutations.

Yeah, apparently.. I was just happy to find them at all. I'll probably switch over to bran too then if that's the case, looks like the BE is just as good.

Damn dave, do you tanp/flatten down the top surface after inoculation? Ive never had thay even if a pinset on pio. And is that second flush chestnut?
Do you have a pic of your steamer full by chance, im just worried i need to allow more steam around the bags, idk my blocks colonize fine i guess.
And im switching pellets too. What do you think about straw pellets deadman?
I was using a farm store bran pellet, super light brown, just switched to one thats 2$ more per pallet, so like 235, and its conpletely different, like really grean and seems less consistent material wise once hydrated. Idk almost makes me want to do a comparison grow with an additional 3rd brand.
But i really want to try straw pellets.
Also soon im going to compare analysis from wheat and soy as in depth as possiblr and see if i can figure out why you cant do wheat bran 50/50 like soy, and what you might be able to supplement along with wheat bran to make it conparable to masters mix.

Coworker got excited about some gourmets I've brought him. He bought a growkit. I "babysat" it and cloned it.
Had to grow in the dark to keep temperature cool, I assume it is a cold weather strain as it was his Xmas present.
Little light in color from lack of blue light?

First flush chestnut, nothing special done to the a.aeg. bags. Just inoculate, shake, put on the shelf. Maybe it's the larger air gap in my bags?? I use 1/5th grain jar per bag, what's your spawn rate?
My hypothesis is that straw pellets will be slightly better than wood pellets but I've never tried them. I only know I've gotten massive flushes on straw using 20% spawn.

Looking forward to your soy hulls comparison.

Thinking about Coastals, a farm store local to here at least. We will see.
And maybe the air gap.... and damn your spawn rates low but yout fruit prime. I'm using like 3 cups for a 12lb, so a little more relatively I guess...
Idk I've supped at 28+% and 14ish%, now I'm at 20 lol, we will see how they fruit.
Got black kings coming in finally, surprised how the primordial and pins are very much like kings.

Yeah they're a lot like kings but not as stiff more sponges.
Maybe try a lower spawn rate with pio. Might make them act weird if they're over supplemented/over spawned. My bags are 4.5lbs and I would guess I'm using about a half cup or so on each one? Not sure how many cups are in a quart of spawn.

Today's harvest.

Black kings and pio pinning, oysters wall of shiitaki, almost last round of shiitaki for good, might try maitaki. I know my arms small, but the lions mane is not! And a big black.

Oh ya and look at that mutant shiitaki!

Whenever anyone mentions mutant shiitake, I always have to post this pic:

A lot of you have already seen this but I still find it amazing to this day. It grew like that, the section of the cap was not sliced off by me or anything, it seriously grew like that. It's probably my favorite mutant ever lol

nice lions mane farm.
I like the mutants personally.. Forrester, that looks like some Houdini shenanigans. Like it cut it's cap off and kept growing.
Do your bags dry out when you cut the front open wide like that, farm? Well the oysters looking good regardless.
