I haven't seen a cicada here in Northern Virginia. I've seen some holes tho, not many.

Haven't had much rain since the Mother's Day deluge and it's been cold, but I decided to hit up some spots hoping to find some fatties that were brave enough to come up maybe Mon or Tues. Was not having any luck in the usual knotweed patches and the light started fading. I was having trouble finding my way out when I stopped over a debris pile to check my phone and get my bearings, and there they were! At that point I'd been hunting for 4 hours after driving 2 (after work).
Unlike the tiny specimens I was finding in the knotweed (and only under knotweed) and getting confused with agrocybes etc, I knew exactly what this shroom was the moment I saw it. It's an incredibly beautiful mushroom. I'm not sure if you guys believe in this, but I think that they can give us a taste of the experience when we collect them, before we've even eaten them. That was my experience anyway.
So there weren't a ton of em but I'm super excited that I'm finally out of the friggin knotweed!!
No pics because of low light and rushing but will upload what I have tmrw.

They like to grow in knotweed and on the banks but ime the best hunting is further away from the water, at least this time of year.

I think the season is just about over. No rain in over a week and no rain forecast for the next ten days.

Could be over or just starting up here. Hard to tell due to my own poor timing. But first time I ever found ovoids here was during early to mid July. Things are just difficult/different in glaciated Ohio.
Anyway here are my finds from yesterday. Let me know if you notice anything funny but everything seems to be bluing moderately to heavily. In the field pic you can see some were dusted with mud and just looked like a leaf from a distance. Makes me think how many I might have missed. Going out in a bit to find out.
Two rookie questions: what do you do for mud/dirt? I don't feel right about washing them first (or at all?). Maybe just brush and eat lol
Two. Is there concern about mulch being treated? Is it treated? This wasn't mulch but jw.

koods say it ant so!!! Its just a pause or a time-out. I mean the last couple of years, we've skipped spring & went straight into summer... Perhaps having an actual Spring season (1 lasting over 2 wks) will give the OVOIDS a comeback tour IF we ever get a soaking rain that doesn't get blow-dried away the following day.

Dirt should come off when they dehydrate, make sure they are not to dirty to safely identify!! As far as mulch being treated, obviously it is treated with colorant, and some mulch also has weed killer added to it, not to mention people often spray glyphosate on the weeds in landscape beds, so yeah the risk is there, id be more concerned about areas where large scale vegetative control is applied, like the sides of roads, along pipelines, power lines, big construction projects, railroads, etc. Best to eat them from clean substrate in the wild or on plain woodchips. Not too sure about the mushrooms absorbing toxins from the substrate there is still debate on whether or not this is an issue, but the risk of the chemicals being applied directly on the fruit bodies is real.
Also DC ovoid season must be lame because we got wave number 3 of pins coming up here, looking like we are gonna go till mid june

Thanks for the great reply... though you got me thinking I should take better pics and put my finds in ID forum but I think I'm good (famous last words).
Also, my spot... somewhat by a road, somewhat by a train, but I think its safe... as safe as an major river in 2021 can be, that is. Actually this river has a bad history in this regard so if you know history you know which river.

Gotta go to them swampy, naturally irrigated areas

True. They predict rain and it never happens
50 to 90% below normal rain for the past 30 days for most of the east coast. Only bright spot is western pa

I’ve been spot on so far
This season has been my worst ever and it’s not even close. I’ve collected in a month what would normally take me 15 minutes. It’s awful.
