Having problems with Rye taking too long to colonise
    #27308658 - 05/14/21 04:17 PM (3 years, 8 months ago)

Like the title says, my brown rice is colonising quickly and it's making a stable spawn, but my attempts with Rye are, to put it bluntly, shit... in comparison.

The rye takes ages to catch, and the mycelium takes ages to spread through it in jars or bags. I'll admit I haven't used it all that much, just a couple kg of it, so I accept there will be a learning curve, but what  could be the cause of this?

The rice is catching straight away and after a few days ready to break up and when broken, three or four days later it's almost a solid mass.

I'm thinking the rice is softer and easier for the myc to chew into and eat up.. hence the quicker turnaround.

I don't soak my rye and I cook it for about 12 minutes. Is that making the rye too tough or something?

Does it matter if the rye splits while I'm cooking it? This is part of the reason I don't cook it longer.

I've got a big sack of the stuff but not having much fund with it so far.

i don’t use rye, but maybe you aren’t hydrating the grains properly? are you following a proven tek for rye? or are you just winging it?

I have a similar issue!
Been 4 weeks since inoculation with agar, shaken once about 2 weeks in when about 20% colonised, recovered in a few days but seems slow now.
I soaked for 18h and simmered for 10mins, were a few burst grains.

Yeah sounds like your winging it, also pics could help identify any problems too.

yeeeeeaah you gotta be soaking rye. Soaking it with a little gypsum and/or weak coffee (courtesy of RR) will be of great benefit to you as well but you can get away with just water. Look for RR's Let's Grow Mushrooms DVD. I believe it's $5 right now and it has damn near everything you need for the basics.

When rye splits it releases starch which will feed bacteria.
soak da' grains.

Im not sure i understand your process. 12min is not lomg enough. Also, you shudnt see busted grains after 12min, unless the laws of physics are different in your kitchen.
However, grain berries all seem fairly similar in prep.

You boil them till they turn somewhat translucent. If you see opaque in the center, it's not cooked yet. Right about the point when they become completely cooked you shud start to see a couple busted grains. Time to drain/dry. Also, the mass of grain in your pot shud damn near triple in size.

I'll boil grain berries for like 40min or so, then dry for 2hrs with a fan on it b4 jarring for PC. Comes out perfecto mundo!

:whathesaid:

p9hu7 & smartattack helped me on this and have an interesting thread going on. (Third link in my sig)

Bursted rye should not be the only indicator. Some rye grains are cut in half depending on your batch.

These cut rye will burst quickly but the rest will be undercooked.

Another important thing is to make sure your rye is dry on the outside.

I'm a noob so take my opinion as such.

I simmer my rye for 30 minutes minimum without a soak.. I’m guessing yours is too dry as well.

This is what my rye qts look like for reference

Thanks Faht, much appreciated.

30 min minimum is what I'll do with it next.

I don't notice any split grains there faht, is that because you're simmering it you think? Mine's splitting quite a few grains and I'm not rolling boiling it either.

There’s a bunch of burst grains for sure.. a lil hard to see but I actually simmer for 35min but most ppl don’t like as many burst kernels as I do.. as long as your inoculate is clean, burst grains aren’t a problem.. myc likes the exposed starch; jumps off/colonizes quickly, but that’s just my personal preference.

Your burst grains could be broken grains that were broken from the get go.

Best to check the center of the grains so that it looks translucent.. if it’s still white, it needs more time.

Thanks again Faht. I was thinking my prep was fucked if I saw too many burst grains. I'll go back to rye and go with the 30min simmer and check for translucency. Ta
