Does anyone feel they have better results using more water in their substrate? I use what I understand to be the hobby's standard parts. I know often what we perceive isn't necessarily "best practice". But often times a week after making the mix it seems to lighten on the surface(with 95%-100% humidity) to what seems to be a more dry than wet substrate(lots of practice with coir in flower gardening). I know with more water there is less air that's important to the mix but it just seems off.
I'm using the standard 40g coir/1/2 cup vermiculite/1 cup of water(thanks Fahts for the small version refresher).

Depends on spawn to substrate ratio. More sub means more moisture. Maybe dry there and too much air flow?

I always have my best results from CVG that's hydrated to the point where a fistful squeezed emits just a drop or two. When the pinset comes in bottom watering is where it's at to keep the substrate hydrated.
The mycelium colonizes better when you have proper field capacity and the mycelium decides to grow big fruits. Saturated substrate leads to dwarf fruits. When the mycelium starts the big fruits you can bottom water or mist heavy to support the need for the flush.

Agreed for sure. I just assumed, OP had like 1:1 ratios, running out of moisture due to that.

I tried that level of capacity first but ended with dry smaller clumps when mixing it in the bucket. Typical lighter brown color and pretty fibrous.
I upped the water to a point where a fist full squeeze releases a small steady drip of water which Ive found more effective in terms of overall coir hydration.
However both ratios of water dont give me proper surface conditions once fully colonized, like ive seen a few posts here state. But a little misting once fully colonized sets the sub with a great layer of surface beading thatll hold for the first flush.
