ID Assistance: Tomentose myc or mold on agar?
    #27307417 - 05/13/21 07:13 PM (3 years, 8 months ago)

Sup everyone,

Rhizo mycelium is easy to spot as it grows on plates, but Im still fairly new to agar and am having a hard time judging/differentiating wispier/tomentose like growth as either myc or molds.

How do these plates look like to yall? T1 plates off a swabbed plate. Media is potato flakes and agar.

Plate 1:

Plate 2:

the pics of the top of the plates look fine to me. are those spots on the pics of your plates with the light behind it just sediment from your potato flakes or whatever? if they aren't, that's probably contamination. but you 100% have myc there

fuck yeah! i figured, as my plates look like that too if i don't strain the potato flakes out first. i'd say you're looking golden then. a lot of my plates look like that- i think it's a genetic and/or nutrient thing. you might even be able to use those plates if you're feeling ballsy, but a clean t2 plate should leave you in prime condition to put to grains

i think the key indicator it's myc is that it's growing somewhat organized & thick, with a clear pattern (unless it's totally fuzzy tomentose but that's obvious) where as molds like that are usually much more disorganized/whispy/dusty/whatever

Cut them into 3 sections and dropped the slices into different jars. Never seen growth so wispy; lets see what grows.

Appreciate you guys dropping in :raisemyglass:
