BRF cakes came out of PC looking way too small? 1

I made up some BRF jars yesterday and they came out of the PC looking like they had shrunk down way too far. I used a normal 2:1:1 recipe of verm, water, and BRF and PC'd them for 60mins at ~15-17 PSI with foil over the lids. I waited for the pressure to drop and then removed the jars and let them cool on the countertop. Here's some pics of the two worst looking jars

All of the jars were filled up with BRF mixture (I shook each jar against my hand to tamp down the mixture without packing it down using the spoon so that there were no pockets of air) and then topped with about a half inch of dry verm that I leveled off before screwing on the lids. So you can see that they shrank down quite a bit. This is the first time I've ever had this problem so I'm not sure what I did wrong or how to prevent it next time. My plan is to just dump all of these and try again but I'm not sure what to do differently next time.

Happened to me too, I just packed the BRF mix tighter next time, so it wouldn't (have that much air inside)shrink that much. You can still use those, but I suggest you inoculate in an SAB, take the lid off the jar and stab the cake with your red hot needle, careful not to have things hanging above the open jar. Otherwise you might get bacterial or mold contam if you just poke the lid with your needle and let the spore solution sit in the open air.

Just tap the sides of the jar and look to get it to settle a bit. I`d never push down from top. Also don`t overdo with packing too tight next time. The rim should be proper cleaned beforehand.

Alright I made some new jars today. The first jars I made I was already tapping the sides to get it to settle and wasn't pushing down from the top at all except to even out the top before putting the dry verm layer down. I also cleaned the rims with paper towels every time I've done it.
But this time I'm going to leave them to cool in the PC instead of taking them out as soon as the pressure drops. That's the only thing I can think of that's different from the BRF jars I've made in the past.

if you're pressure cooking switch to grains if you can buy locally. You didn't have to make new jars.

I disagree completely. Keep doing what ur doing man ur on the right track. Dont listen to this ass hat. PF Tek and BRF is the best thing to go for in a first grow or a thousandth grow IMO.

I'm starting from MSS so I chose BRF to reduce chance of contams etc.
Once I get to the point that I can clone fruits to agar then I'll swap over to grains or something else.
By the way, my most recent jars came out much better but still pretty shrunken compared to the original jars. It must be this new BRF brand that I'm using. Either way, they seem fine otherwise so I'm going to try them out.

shakezilla if you're pressure cooking you're already a step above BRF. If you can find RR's Lets grow mushrooms grain prep video you'll see it's as easy as BRF. Regardless your substrate is your preference. I doubt shrinkage will ruin anything since you pressure cooked.
IF you pasteurized on stovetop instead like a beginner then you don't want the shrinkage.
