Although adult fungus gnats are attracted to moist organic materials, such as potting soil, the potential problem is with the gnat larvae, which are very tiny (barely visible) worm like creatures. Fungus gnat larvae used to destroy my young tender baby carrot plants in the lab (the larvae eat the roots) but I doubt they would harm a PF cake. Some fragrant oils (citronella, peppermint) are said to repel the adult gnats.

Get Mosquito dunks, Aqua-bac or something similar made with BTI bacteria. Toss it into a spray bottle with water and let it sit overnight. Spray household plants/substrates with it to kill the larvae. Doesn't appear to have a noticeable impact on mycelium, YMMV.

Fog the air with pyrethrin based insecticide, don't spray your substrate directly with it.

Repeat after one week.

Shit won't matter if you've got a wet yard though, if there's a shady area of your yard that's usually more damp than the other places you'll have fungus gnats coming inside lured by the smell of cube mycelium, trichoderma etc. It's a real cock to have spent a few months without them after struggling to get rid of them only for them to come back because a few got in through a window crack.

You can sprinkle Aqua-Bac around your yard for mosquito/gnat control though.

Ok goin out onna limb again...no one has mentioned the gnats symbiotic relationship
with Trichoderma.
Also the addition of diatomaceous earth... "just mix every 50lb bag with about 2 cups of diatomaceous earth. No bugs, ever.Yes a mask is a good idea when adding."
The diatoms cut the larvae and they dry up.

I have mentioned it plenty of times on these forums citing the research done by Penn State and constantly getting into it with TCs regarding this. Pregnant females are hardwired to seek trichoderma as the scent causes the largest response measured in their antennae.

Anyways DE is fucking useless when it gets wet so it's useless in this hobby as the first time you mist it loses its ability to perform its function.

BTI for larvae, Pyrethrins for adults, as said.

Thanks Starbones and I think I got that data from you.

But DE, I've used in aquarium filters, it's also an ingredient in many foods.

ya the flies are whatever but its because they lay eggs and larva are those white worms that eat entire mushrooms from inside out but hopefully done flushing before that.

I've had a few projects stall out because of them. I know rr doesn't seem to mind them but they're worse than trich in my books (at least more annoying). Have had some success with bti - been reluctant to try pyrethrin but I have some here if they come back.

Crucial bit of advice is to quarantine any projects immediately. I went from one gnat in one tub to thousands EVERYWHERE very quickly

I only had a real problem with them in my cannabis. It's in a tent right next to mush tubs and they really preferred the soil. BTI used properly works wonders and mosquito bits will lats a long time it s3ems

I've found that once they show up, its already too late (unless you're talking a few...maybe if you get rid of them ASAP before they lay eggs you have hope). The best course of action is to move non infested tubs to a new area or stop all together. Spend that time getting rid of any leftover gnats.

They multiply quick—add more tubs and they multiply even quicker. Im talking hundreds if not more.

If you wanna cut down numbers quick, I've found a vacuum hose is ideal. suck all those fuckers away

No trading animals on the shroomery... :laugh2:

Really though, fungus gnats shit, puke, and fuck out their own microbiome just like me and you. Everything they need to proliferate. Trich included.

Frogs come standard as a bakers dozen from most places.
