Fungus Gnats 1

Hey all - first timer - PF Tek - all my cakes have done at least 1 flush - noticed some fungus gnats have taken home. I did put a sticky trap inside - my biggest concern is for at least now, while I have it some what under control - other than a nuisance; is there anything I should be worried about? I wasn’t sure if they’d have an effect on the actual fruits!

Sounds like you have done what you needed to do.
Since your brf cakes are fully colonized I don't think it's much of a concern.
Are they more attracted to the cakes or hanging out in your substrate?
Are you using a sgfc?

Yea to sgfc - and they’re really just hanging on the cakes - they don’t really seem to be doing much, and obviously once it comes time, I’ll clean everything out - just wasn’t sure if there was anymore to worry about, or if there are some risks to fruits

I wouldn't be too worried about it. I believe we consume many bug parts in our fruits and veggies.
I've inhaled a fruit fly before. I'm still alive
The next dunk should keep em in check. Good job on the sticky trap.
I personally think you're good.
Maybe someone else will chime in with a different opinion.

The gnats can cause mold on plants maybe mushrooms also. If you use a dehydrator to dry your fruits that'll help but one thing I know about those gnat basterds you see a few now you'll see a thousand in a few days.

Yeah, they come to lay eggs. It`s no fun having them in your tubs. Since we placed some lavender around the windows, they never returned. I once had them here, but got them fast drowned in shotglasses with soapy water and a shot of fruity red wine.

yeah without knowing where the eggs are it'll be hard to eradicate. I've had luck spraying some neem oil water on the soil of plants but I don't know if you want that stuff on mushroom substrates.

If you got gnats then it's time to clean the house. If they infest your plants use nematodes and BTI.

For sure - I appreciate all those answers - they suck lmao - I think currently my biggest concern is the fruiting I have going on now - if those typically would be ok to consume as long as they look ok

I know some people having a hard time getting rid of them. One had to use an ozone generator.
They are attracted by the smell of fungi and by yellow colour, they lay eggs, the matures come to eat, that`s all i know about these dickheads and that`s enough for me.
So as i mentioned, to prevent this i placed lavender near the windows, that fuckers really hate it. An exterminator once gave me the advice. I never saw only one single gnat again, even no mosquitos, and we have quite a pleasant smell in the house.

I had a really bad gnat infestation and nothing seemed to help. Tried peppermint oil, bti, nematodes, yellow traps. Even stopped growing for two weeks. The fuckers kept coming back. So I said fuck it and gassed them with insecticide. I think it was called "ardap fogger". Never had a problem since. From time to time one single gnat appears, but I can live with that.
