Re-Using Overly Wet BRF Substrate
    #27303730 - 05/11/21 01:52 AM (3 years, 8 months ago)

Hello,
I recently steamed some jars containing 2:1:4/3 verm:BRF:water and I believe the substrate is too wet. I removed a jars and the substrate is very clumpy and also very packed down.
Is this a bust? Should I try again since I haven't inoculated them with a proper 2:1:1?
Also, if I should redo this would it be possible to take the substrate out of the jars and add additional BRF/verm until a desired consistency is reached? Qualitatively, what should the consistency be like? Or would it be best to just whip up a fresh batch of substrate and then steam again?

Thank you for your assistance!

It's best to start over since you've already 'baked' the substrates once and baking it again would be too much I think. Do you cover the lids in foil while you sterilize? Depending on what kind of lids you have the foil might be the issue since water condenses between the foil and the rim of the lid/injection holes. GL

Edit: (verm can be exchanged for Coco coir and BRF can be exchanged for oatmeal, same ratios as with original recipe, 2parts hydrated coir/vermiculite and 1 part oatmeal/BRF)

I did put foil on the jars while sterilizing them but I think I just packed them down too much when loading them. I didn't know that about substituting oatmeal. Do I have to blend it in a food processor to flour-like consistency first?

EDIT: Also, I am not pressure cooking. Can I still substitute the BRF for oatmeal if I am just using a pot w/ lid?

You don't have to blend it but get one that's 'easy to boil' this is how mine looks like I'd say these flakes are about 1/3 of 'normal' oatmeal. And yes I've steam sterilized coir-oatmeal cakes with no issues
