Making a flow hood... what size filter is ideal for inoculating spawn bags?
    #27303673 - 05/10/21 11:55 PM (3 years, 8 months ago)

Im thinking either 24x36 or 24x24 to save some money on it. Would 24x24 be enough?

Go big! I have a 24”x48” and its awesome. Truth be told it could be a *little* bit taller for the big bags, but other than that its a dream. Annnnd, if you’re going through the whole process of making a flowhood you might as well make a big one so you have more room to work.

Go as big as you can afford/store comfortably - more workroom just makes your life easier in the future.  Another vote for 4x2...

You *can* make a 24x24 work, but it will take some attention to detail to make sure everything stays in the flow.

I just bought a 48x18 last week based on this recent recommendation from Smartattack.

48x18 is an excellent size if you want to search that size as well. My hood is this size and I really see no need to be a full 2 feet high. Even G2G with bags is not an issue.

18" tall is too short to work bags like op wants. You gotta lift the bags up with a rack at least an inch or two, don't ever work directly on the table.

skip to 0:30, look at 0:37 seconds specifically to see what happens on your work table.

That's an opinion from an owner of a 30x30 hood right?  How would you know for sure?
A filled grain bag is about 12" tall, and it seems to make sense if you have a tape measurer.  I'd definitely prefer spending money on width than unnecessary height, but to each their own, and you may be right in the long run- but Smart's opinion may be right as well 🤙.

Edit:  Smart's worked successfully with an 18" height and everything too.  so it's really not an opinion at this point, but experience  :thinker:

Why does the entire bag, including the bottom need to be in the flow?

when you break the flow you bring eddies of room air onto the item and it can crawl up the bags.

Bags stand about 12-13" tall and then you have 1-2" of rack to get the bag off the work surface, and then you need space for the bottle to hold over the bag or to G2G but you also need several inches of space above this so you aren't working in room air mixed in. I barely have much room over my hands when pouring in a 30" hood. I know lots of people are doing 24" hoods too and I have used it in the past but 30" tall really gives you the height to feel comfortable.

The bags are 20" tall when standing tall. I suppose I can lay the bottom on its side so the opening stays well below the top part if I choose 24x24. I'm not sure what is the benefit of doing 3-4-foot wide though. 30x30 looks good, but where do you buy one that's 30x30? Honestly the best source I've found is fungi.com but what other websites should I be looking at?

Are you just measuring a flat bag?  They get shorter with grains in them....

Oh I see, yea I haven't used bags yet... and planning to this month. So 24x24 would work fine too, it seems.

I work with my bags sitting flat on my workspace alllll the time.

Lifting the full bag into the flow is unnecessary. Sandman may think it is but
I have a full edible business and a bustling hobby to prove otherwise.

24x24 will work but I'd go with the 2x3 or 2x4 if you have the scratch.

Gotcha. Seems like 24x24 will work fine then.

My 1st hood was a 24x24. Worked great for a few years but you'll want a bigger one eventually.

Just because someone is successful doesn't mean they are right! Plenty of people have doing stuff for a long time the wrong way. Working right on the table is not proper aseptic technique. This is taught in lab class. No disrespect intended and not looking to argue about it. I'm sure you're cool. It just bugs me when I see people try to flex what they have going on as if it makes them right as a matter of fact.

Watch any video of the bigger farms doing their bag work and you'll see every one of them with their bags on the table.

Myers, southwest, fresh from the farm, etc. All noc up bags without lifting
the entire bag into the flow. My flow gap is only 1.5" anyway.

I'm not flexing and acting like my way is right, simply saying that what
you are saying isnt true. In no way is it necessary and none of the big players do it. Look up their bag vids and you'll see that none of them elevate their bags.

I dont even lift g2g jars fully into the flow. The only thing that is constantly
in the full flow is petri dishes. Do what suits you, I was just answering ops question:shrug:
