always wonder if folks had been eating ovoids for longer then 7 years or so they started poppin in the shroomery. seems like ungodly amounts out there would think some people woulda been eating prior thinking a type of cyan or something..

I always think about this. No doubt its range has expanded dramatically over the last few years, but it must have had a pretty wide range even just 10 years ago, right?

I've thought it might advance our understanding of Ovoids to have a very detailed history of the mulch industry in the areas where we find Ovoids now. I'm pretty sure there's a 'mothership' area where they didn't need propagation, but where that is is still an open question, IMO.

The native shamans have undoubtedly been using them for hundreds of years before the whites arrived here. Really is a shame how much habitat we have destroyed since. This place was paradise at one point, all the fish and game you could eat for free. No debt slavery to make some man rich, they were living in harmony with nature in a way that most modern humans could never understand. I feel at peace in the plains, these mushrooms really could save humanity by showing these people what they have been missing. I've seen the shadows of our ancestors dancing in the mist of the rain, they were smiling upon me.

I've been hunting them longer than 7 years, lol. People have been eating them forever.

Is it common for them to grow straight out of downed trees?

I've found knotweed around a couple spots, but they very rarely actually grow in it. Honestly I think it's just a coincidence.

Interesting. I have found ovoids growing from the base of knotweed, and I always assumed that the decaying stalks were their food, but this certainly gives me the motivation to spread out. There has to be a motherload somewhere nearby.</font>

They do in fact feed on knotweed, but its rare to find them.

Ive cultivated them on it.

Lawd that is a delight to behold even in a photo. I've yet to find a really exciting patch this year. I've put in a lot of legwork for a few finds here and there, maybe 1/2oz dried to date, but I've added some new spots for sure that have a lot of potential.

My buddy just told me he's got 10lb of sawdust spawn from some ovoid prints I sent him last spring ready for me, so I might just start the motherpatch and retire haha! ...nah. I'll never stop hunting these.

For anyone looking for habitat examples, there is a guy on youtube who puts out 20 min videos of hunting in ovoid habitat, his youtube channel is WipsiShrooms

The best patches in my area seem to be in woodchips near streams with scattered plants providing optimal humidity retention

They were probably a lot rarer before. Human activity seems to be very favorable for ovoids.

Eat that sum bitch and write a trip report

Also i think the destruction of miles and miles of floodplains for human activities definitely negatively impacts their numbers in natural habitats, obviously mulch distribution is a good thing but we've done a lot of damage too

That spot looks so similar to mine, the only one I found that's fruiting nicely this year. Never found them so close to the canal before. But I guess that's the key this year. I also heard about that cicada butt infecting fungi on some podcast recently.

Beautiful brother I’ve seen these ancient indigenous sort of spirits also, they said they have been killed but still live here in spirit, they are calling us to be the ones that live with nature.... not against it, to see all as sacred... big and small...

Just a friendly PSA to watch for trolls as you hunt:

The large mushroom in the center right is an agrocybe species, which can look similar to ovoids to an untrained eye and can grow in and among ovoids in the same patch, as shown here (all the other mushrooms pictured are small ovoids). Agrocybe sp. are really common, and often mistaken for ovoids.

Agrocybe will have a more brittle texture, brown/tan stalk, typically thicker stalk, and sometimes rings on the cap, like in the photo. They will lack an umbo (nipple), though ovoids sometimes do as well. They also have brown spores, and critically, don't bruise blue.

Please check each mushroom carefully when you harvest, learn the lookalikes and stay safe!

Especially when they're saturated with water, they can look so much like ovoids from up top. But yeah as soon as you dip down to pluck one, you'll be able to tell right away by how they feel.
