Expanding P. Ovoideocystidiata from agar
    #27302034 - 05/09/21 07:36 PM (3 years, 8 months ago)

Hey there.

I found a nice Ovoid this Spring and I decided I wanted to take a clone. So I did just that. It actually worked out really well. I only did 3 plates at first and had enough clean growth to get a clean plate with just one transfer. Didn't expect that from a wild clone, but it worked out. So I transferred that clean plate to 8 more so I have enough to work with.

My dilemma now is how to expand it. I plan to put it outside at some point so I'm trying to not use grain if I can. Don't want critters ruining maybe a year or 2 of work to dig up some grain.

I could do cardboard, but I'm afraid it would dry out before the myc really got a chance to take hold.

I was thinking maybe pasteurize some wood chips (probably collect some from the creek bank) and some dirt of some sort (maybe just coir?) and kind of layer it with dirt, agar, wood, then some more dirt, just to keep it all wet?

Or do you guys think it'd be best to just go ahead and use a little grain and expand to wood from there?

Edit - maybe go to sawdust or a mix with sawdust in it?

Thanks in advance for any opinions.

These are 2 different plates. I used another clean one for expansion.

My favorite way to expand for outdoor beds is to go to grain, then grain to hardwood fuel pellets for sawdust spawn, then sawdust spawn to woodchip bed.

I always use lipa's hwfp tek.

Works awesome for all wood lovers including gourmet.

I meant to put sawdust in there as an option. Maybe I shouldn't do a dab right before I post, lol.

Have you done Ovoids or are you just speaking generally for woodlovers?

In general. It also helps to limit the amount of grain present in the bed.

Nice work cloning a wild fruit.  That is the ideal route to go with woodlovers, in my experience.  Bypassing the MS steps will get you to a good result much faster.  Good suggestions so far.  I just want to add that, since you have a clean clone culture ready to go on agar, there's no reason to think in a 1-2 year time frame.  Focus on getting a consolidated block in the ground and you could very possibly have fruits later this summer.  Ovoids are aggressive AF and move much faster than other cold-weather species.

https://mycotopia.net/topic/11272-waylits-woodlover-tek/

this is how im growing my ovoids/cyans/azzies

if you skip colonizing grain spawn and go agar>woodchips it will take months just to colonize a quart of woodchips. colonize grain spawn just like you would with cubes then mix that in a tub with woodchips as per the tek above. once that is colonized bury it all outside with some topsoil over it.

if the topsoil casing doesnt keep the critters out you need to build a fence of some sort around your patch. remember even if they areng going for your grains they certainly will come for your fruits

Agar to woodchips does seem like a poor choice.

You mean something like this ; )
