Crossposting from the pic o' the day thread. It can be much faster than PE by a large margin. Doesn't need casing and given some work to pull preferable phenotypes will give you some absolute monsters.
These are today.

Fast too, this was the same substrate 6 days ago and the big cock in the middle there was just this guy standing by itself.

Another day or so and the two early ones will be harvested. The pictures don't do the size justice and I'm eager to see the weight from just those two alone. If given a choice anyday of the week I'd grow Melmak before PE, your mileage may vary.

Sorry for the crap photo, I finally got my mak to germnate! I took two transfers off this original plate, one from each germination section. I'm planning on growing both out and fruiting them in some Mudabottles to see if I get a pheno I like.

If I can suggest something, skip a bunch of the work with Muda bottles and simply just spawn to bulk and fill bottles with CVG/spawn, birth them when colonized or let them fruit in the bottle.
It makes it really, really easy to find different cultures in the mess. All you need to do is use a big mixing bowl then fill containers and put them in your monotub.

You get the idea. It's actually really grand for fruiting to third flushes because instead of an entire monotub getting fucked when mold hits you can just swap out one of the CVG/spawn Unbottles. While they're fruiting you can keep a stack of colonizing bricks/bottles ready to swap in.

Thanks for the tip! I was actually thinking of doing just that — spawning to bulk then putting that into the Ziploc bottles to colonize. I just called it Mudabottles, cause I wasn't sure what else to call it! I was going to top fruit them however. Do you find it's better to birth them when fruiting? They don't loose too much moisture?

Top fruiting them is possible and works. It requires really tamping the sides down though as the colonization happens and the cake shrinks it can lead to side pinning.
I've been growing Mak on 1/2 quart "Unbottles" and the fruits get so big they completely suck all the moisture out, the cakes are lighter than air after the fruits are off so I'm going to start bottom watering them like I did with my Avery culture.
With these ones I left the lids under them and as I misted water would collect and get succ'd back up by the mycelium, a user named Violet had really good experience with something similar.
Eventually I just started putting the cakes on the bottom of the tubs so they could succ all the water that collected.

With my Mak bricks I just turned their tubs upside down to raise them up like such.
This was 1/2 quart cakes. Succ'd completely dry would have benefited greatly from bottom watering during fruiting.
 The bricks.
Those bricks yielded 1920g wet on their first flush. Some absolute bastards in there but again, bottom watering would have benefited them.

I’ve been doing something similar but with shoeboxes. I use grocery bag liners and once it’s colonized I lift them out by the liner and pack them into a mono.
Mostly just cuz it’s better conditions than a shoebox and I can run a few different things in there at a time.
Looks like you found the perfect size trays that don’t waste any space.

Yeah there was a lot of shopping to try and achieve monotub level fruiting surface and the same thickness that I would normally make a monotub.
I fucked up and ordered 500 gusset bags for just going bags in the monotub and stuff but I didn't see the thickness was only 2 mil so they don't stand up at all. Found a place selling 12x8x24" 4 mil gusset bags and will probably start using those soon. Unicorn and Salai bags are out because all that extra money for a 5 micron filter I won't use on their XLS-B.

Thanks for the tips guys! Seems like bottom watering is really important with Maks especially when growing them off smaller subs, makes sense since they get so damn big. I’ve actually found that to be true with 2nd and 3rd flush of my TOC too. I still have about a half box of Unicorn XLS-A .5 micron bags so I could use those to do some tests. Do you guys find Maks are okay with lower FAE? I’ve been seeing some impressive bag grows, but wasn’t sure if that was just the genetics those guys were running.

I got a case of unicorn 3TL and just cut the extra length off the bottom. The normal were out of stock and the longs cost $9 less anyway
Sticking to lined tubs using 3mil liners 24'x28'. I spawned a bunch of wet ass tubs recently cause my coir prep was lazy. Turns out the difference between pouring hot water on broken coir block vs whole chunk is massive. Also, I don't think I can keep the tap hot enough to prep 10+ tubs in one session. Even decent spawn goes bad when you swamp it out

Do you normally hydrate a whole brick?
I always pry layers as thin as possible off mine otherwise I end up with tons of dry spots. I’ve never tried doing a whole brick right out of the bag but I imagine it wouldn’t hydrate super evenly.

yea those 5kg blocks are impossible to hydrate whole, you always gotta break up a bunch of dry spots.

I meant even in large chunks. Cocogro would absorb a fuck ton even as a mega mass, but I digress. I use 750g but recently tried to prep so many so fast I barely broke the 750g allotments into more than a few pieces each. Saved negligible time really and wasted tons of potential I feel. Lesson learned and on to the next 20 tubs. Had a couple bags like geodes of uncolonized grain today. Very annoying.
Honestly it mostly just shows me how dirty the spawn probably really was.

Just completely submerge in way too much water and drain after like an hour. Works a charm and no measuring.

That’s absolutely the way to do it.
I usually only spawn a few shoeboxes at a time so I don’t even drain it, just grab and squeeze. It does get pretty soupy towards the end though.
I need to buy a big colander.

I'd rather have accuracy and consistancy. I like my results when I dial things in. A pallet of coir would be convenient to keep the procedure and recipe consistant. This roots royale is actually pretty nice. Upped the dry cpir to 800g, and I can do like 6 tubs in one session without too much drop in tap water temp. Just gotta space my work out, be patient, and never cut corners. Nothing but quality.
If you want a big colander look at asian restaurant supply. Found my 2.5' unit at the smallest korean grocer in town.

Still using 4L of water @ 800g?

Soaked and then gravity drained is as consistent as it gets. The coir will then be holding as much water as possible without a drop of excess, as any excess will have drained off.
No need for a big colander, a bucket with holes in the bottom.
