Help me bring back an antique Presto back to life (pictures included).

Got this old PC basically for free. Installed a new gasket and plug, unfortunately there is still a small leak right by the handle ( picture with knife pointed at location). At first I thought it was the screw holding the handle so I tightened it, but that didn’t solve the problem.
Take a look at the picture with the small gash on the rim. Can that cause the leak? It’s in the same location.
She gets up to about 14 psi on the gauge (that I assume is not accurate due to age). The weight dances and blows off steam pretty loud at that point. Also a lot of noise of steam escaping can be heard from the problem location.
Any advice is appreciated.

Nice pc. Could it be as simple as unscrewing the handle & cleaning the gunk in there and replace?
How does the leaky side compare to the good side?
Or see if the screw is faulty. Switch the screw with the other side.
Maybe switch the handles to the other sides also
You can eliminate 3 variables there.
How deep is that gash? Does not look to bad from here.

Good idea. The screw on the problem side is rusty compared to the screw on the good side. I will switch them and get back to you.
The gash is very small. It’s the last picture btw.

I hope it's a easy fix from what you have already done. I think you're close to having a cool AND working PC.
Have fun and gewd luck!

Try using silicone RTV to fill the gashes

no dont put any rtv on there yet.
just try flipping the gasket around first. Maybe bend and work the gasket a little to work out any bend in it or puff it up a little.
Is it always the exact same area even after you have removed the gasket?

Switched and cleaned the handles and screw. The problem is still present.
Its always in the same area. I must have removed the gasket a bunch of times probably flipping it.
Ill wait on the RTV.

It does looks like water staining at the nick in the top - Can the edges of it be polished down with a scotchbrite pad or something similar? You can also apply a thin layer of vaseline to the gasket to help it seal better.

Well the screw must have deteriorated somewhat or something. You could try a replacement handle/screw set to fix it the right way. https://www.gopresto.com/product/pressure-canner-cover-handles-85803
or you could try some tiny oring under the screw just make sure it can handle the heat. Silicone or rubber.
a dollop of vasseline isnt a bad idea.

I think it has to be that small gash. There are other small nicks on the rim but this one is the biggest and its right on the flat surface that I assume the gasket sits on.
I don't have any RTV on me now so ill have to wait. If anyone thinks the RTV solution is a bad idea please let me know. Is this pot a toast?

I switched the screw and handle. Didn't help.

OK to fix this you can carefully fill the gash with JB weld and squeegee/scrape it flush and clean, then lightly sand the area flat. You could fill it with silicone too but I think it may be harder to scrape it flat and sand smooth.

Sandy's on it thanks Sandy!
Hey nice catch PBJ710. There is water staining!
If you're going the rtv route. I believe regular silicone may work just as well.
