Hyphal knots shouldn't be visible until you've initiated pinning; but if you're seeing them now, fan at least twice a day. More is better. The only difference between pinning and fruiting conditions is the humidity (when dealing with casings), as the humidity is usually dropped from 95% to 80-85% to allow for evaporation. Once the casing has pinned, you should fan as often as possible, maintain the current temperatures and keep the humidity in the aforementioned range and provide enough light to promote healthy, normal mushroom development.

foaf always puts casings right in terrium (10 gal aqurium with lid) as soon as he cases them and fans once a day. once he thinks there is enough mycellium poking through he turns on the the light and fans 4 to 5 times a day. he said hes never had any problems this way.

Yes pinning has been initiated and hyphal knots were not visible before thes. Small rubbermaid w/ perlite and fanning 5 times a day to keep contams away (huge casing so NO CONTAMS). Is this too much fanning for the pinning stage?

MuffinBear: Yep, that way works too. I've done that many times.

tom: You couldn't fan "too much" unless it's hurting your humidity. The only downfall to constant fanning is that it can dry the casing out. Just keep an eye on your humidity and be liberal with your spraying and it will be fine.

Anyone here ever try using a small fan just to blow air around inside their terrarium? If it's purely internal it shouldn't have any effect on humidity. A computer fan might work well.

Any benefit from this?

An aquarium air pump works just fine. I use a simple in-line air fliter disk [lab supply] to keep it clean. Good example of the need to fan: A day trip recently turned into a 2 day trip, my casing back at home was not getting fanned and the air pump was left off. Return to a patch of nasty cobweb. Basically the only time I ever have this problem is when I don't fan or forget to turn the pump on for a few hours each day.
