Phases With Highest Risk For Infection / BRF -> Bulk
    #27298003 - 05/07/21 02:04 AM (3 years, 8 months ago)

Hello.

I have colonized several jars of BRF/vermiculite using a spore syringe and in a few days I plan to spawn to a bulk coir substrate for use in a monotub. I was wondering in this entire process, from preparation of jars, to inoculation, mixing the spawn and the coir, colonization of the substrate in the tub, and on which sequences carry the greatest risk for contamination. I am a little worried since I did not inoculate in a SAB and while my jars were being colonized I left the holes in the lids uncovered.

Thanks for the advice.

Your greatest risk is generally the initial phase where you colonize your grain so everything involved in that process is fairly important.

Brf tends to be a bit more forgiving so you may still be fine.

The most risky parts are making your jars and then inoculation. Most contams happen either because of bad sterilization, contamed inoculant (which in the case of spores will be almost always. BRF is very forgiving especially with bacteria though so like DERRAYLD said you might still be fine), or at inoculation.
Id suggest you start doing agar and build a SAB ASAP. Its not as hard as it looks. Its way more intimating until you just do it and see how simple it all actually is.

:whathesaid::whathesaid:

All the stages before spawning are crucial.
If you have healthy myc, you spawn in open air,
and it`s hard to mess things up if you bulk just with coir.

I know some people ´noccing jars up open air with good success,
but if something goes wrong, you can`t be sure if it was just the syringe
or your "sterility".
A sab is a step up in the game for sure :wink:

Its a simple tool that takes $25 and 10 minutes that will easily save you hundreds if not thousands of both dollars and working hours over time if you stick to it.

This hobby is "do it right or do it twice" incarnate
Ive learned this the hard way xD
